I know this might get moved, but I hope it doesn't before I get a few answers. How many people split their Broadband when a friend comes over? A couple of my buddies are coming over Saturday night, and I want to get 3 (or at least 2) of us on XBL. I get about 1200kb download, and about 340kb upload. Are there any implications for this? Any help would be appreciated before I go out and buy stuff. Thanks in advance.

A buddy of mine runs 2 boxes at his house without problem and he gets similar speeds to you... shouldn't be an issue (I don't think). But IMO, if you're having people come over with thier own boxes, I'd scrap LIVE alltogether and get some Halo CTF LAN action going!

Just get a nice switch and all your bandwidth with be EQUAL on all your connections :)

We're playing RS3, which, has replaced Halo for the time being. I have a switch, and it should work fine. I know how to set it up, I'm really just looking for others experiences so I know what to expect. I hope that didn't come out wrong, because I really appreciate your imput Chaotic and Frag. In theory, it should serve fine, like a little network, but in practice, if we're all playing the same game on the same server (GO CASPER), then there could potentially be a problem when we're all using bandwidth at the same time.

I don't know too much about this kinda stuff, but do routers do the same thing?(Split the bandwidth equally, that is)

I have a router set-up to "serve" the internet connection. So I have a cable going to my computer, and a cable running downstairs to my basement and hooked into a switch to distribute bandwidth to my Xbox and Laptop if I'm working down there. Most routers come with a 4 port switch built in, so yes, it will. I just havn't done it and am not sure if 3 xboxes sharing bandwidth on XBL will be any good.

A router and switch work similar. They both do routing of packets (information). Where as a hub is a sloppy form of information routing. It doesn't split each individual piece of information down it's own "highway" we can call it like the routers and switches do.
Also a router is more for your Internet technology and it routes DHCP and all Internet traffic through it's firmware. But it's switching technology is the same thing as a stand alone switch.

There potentinally can be a problem. Your just going to have to try it and see how it works. If you have a lot of bandwidth to give out you should be able to have multiple people on your line and never notice any diffrence. For example with this T1 line here it outputs 1.544 U/D MBPS. If i have 4 people on the network using switched technology each user should have around 386k of useable bandwidth. I would say anywhere from 200k of availble bandwidth is efficient enough to have an enjoyable game.

Me and a friend tried it with ghost recon awhile back and it didnt work. We could play seperate games fine, but when we tried to join the same game it got really weird (we couldnt see eachother in the room and instead could see another one of us, like instead of having me scorcher and him, there would be two scorchers on my screen and two hims on the other) then we would get disconnected. I think it was ghost recon though, and not xbox live

Well, I use a standard cable connection and a huge 12 port router. 3 PC's, 1 Laptop and 2 X-Boxs. I have had all of these on the net at the same time with both x-box'x running RS3 in a room thats hosted by one of them....no lag. You should be good to go if you have a decent switch/router.

Hey, thanks man, that's what I was really looking for, someone who had actually done it. I have a sh*tty Linksys router, but it should be fine, and I also use a sweet 3com switch, which can handle anything I trow at it. I got it from work because we needed a bigger switch, so I have this one 'till we need it again. Now, if I could just jet my hands on a decent router.:watchout: Thanks again for sharing that Greenweenie (it's just wong to say that...Greenweenie...eewwww).

When JJaX came over, we did this on my connection. I've also been able to host 2 12-player games on 2 XBox's with no problems, but you know how ubertastic my connection is, so no need for me to brag ;)
Yea, you shouldn't have a problem unless you try and host - that just kills your bandwidth due to the uploading.

Will your Xbox live account even connect if you're on a different ISP? I have Adelphia and I brought my Xbox over to a friends and tried to get online but it wouldn't let me. :(

Yea, it doesn't matter as long as your on the same xbox you can use any broadband connection.

Make the appropriate changes in your dash board to connect.
For example, if you were on cable, than tried to get on DSL , you would enter the PPPoe settings. (Log on info)
Better yet, use the auto detect feature...
