View Full Version : Possible bullet delay in Halo 2 on XBL?

I was just wondering your thoughts on this subject. We all know XBL is nearly perfect, however, depending on the server, you may have slight bullet delay. Does this bug anyone? Or, do you think bullet delay won't happen?
For those who are unsure what I'm referring to, bullet delay is the time you actually pull the trigger and an actual bullet comes out of your gun barrel.
Honestly, I could care less if there is a delay or not...I'm used to playing on even the worst servers on XBC with the first Halo...I can still manage to smoke the host...even if they are trying to dodge the shots.
What do you guys think?

One word, LAG.
Could you imagine if you had lag, people would be like "Hey, look at me, I'm bullet dodging this guy's ammo and his ping is just over 100! Whoops! there goes my plasma grenade and it so happens to land on his head!"
But the sniper wouldn't be as good as it is in the first Halo. I could shoot at anything across the map whilst in mid air, dodging grenades and vehicles. Now we have to factor in bullet lag? No, I don't think that'd be too practical.
I just hope they don't pull a crimson skies style setup for it.
Even in Crimson, you learn to play w/ it. But if I wanted lag, I'd still be on XBC.

I'm not sure you got the point Maximus is tring to get at.... Are you thinking that they are going to put that in the game (that being bullet lag)? The reason I'm thinking this is because you said, "No, I don't think that'd be too practical." This makes it sound as if you are thinking that bungie will make it so Halo 2 will have Bullet lag from a program standpoint and not a lag standpoint.... Which of course they wouldn't
If you didn't mean that then forget that first paragraph.
Now on to what I think... I think that MS and Bungie will most likly do all they can to stop lag during H2. Why do I think this?
Halo 2 is more than likly going to support more than 16 players... While XBC has a problem supporting 16, I think XBL could do 16. More than likly, as I said before though, there will be more players in a big match. This is why I feel that Bungie/MS will have to deal directly with the lag problem.
There are going to be ungodly amounts of people playing Halo 2 over XBL. Therefore, I feel that it would be foolish not to address the issue on the part of MS/Bungie.
I think that MS/Bungie will more than likly put in servers (in Richmond) for the soul purpose of Halo 2 on XBL. I think that would bring down on lag... but unfortunatly you are always going to battle lag, in my opinion. So if someone comes into the game super-slow its going to be hard not to run into some lag problems... Of course if MS/Bungie happens upon a solution to the Lag problem to get rid of such things as bullet lag, then that would be great as well. ;)

Max, bullet delay is unavoidable sometimes. On a great server with a connection like yours, mine, or Casper's, there won't be any at all. But on a bad connection lag will be inevitable.
Of course Bungie has thought about it. It is most likely, if not the deciding factor in the number of people who will be able to play on one server.
Halo on XBC sucks because Halo's multiplayer code is NOT supposed to be used on the internet. It was at one time, but that was before they knew when Xbox LIVE would be ready.
So please don't worry about anything in Halo 2, Bungie has been making the worlds most innovative games for over ten years:
(Biggest innovations)
Pathways Into Darkness- First game to use real-time texture mapping.
Marathon Trilogy- If you don't know why they are good then you should get with the times!
Abuse- Used facemapping, 360 Degree sidescroller.
Myth I & II- Once again, get with the times :)
Oni- "Oni's engine supports huge, multi-elevation indoor and outdoor environments, radiosity lighting, interpolated character animation, a preconditioned, constrained neural net AI that works together and exhibits emergent behavior (real cool), motion blur, gunplay, hand-to-hand combat, and more."
Halo- Get with the times!
Every game they make has an enveloping story that has complex weaves that people are STILL trying to figure out. The gameplay also matches the story in terms of greatness.
Just a little history for you, and I hope you don't worry too much about Halo 2 and how great it will be now that Bungie can take the 2 1/2 years they need to make it!

I deal with bullet lag all the time on Halo PC and XBC, but thats something that is always going to be there with a bad server. This is one of the things that takes much more skill online. I usually get beat by the host, but I have managed to smoke them once or twice, but rarely cause I'm not quite as 1337 as you max.

Does anyone know if you can have 4 players on a box for XBL? It better not be this 1 per box crap like all the other Live games, I won't even bother with it if I can't go on Live with my friends

I meant as a lag problem instead of having it done through the program. If you tried to snipe someone across the map, it'd take quite a bit of time for the bullet to actually hit your target. That's what I was reffering to. And the bullet dodge, I meant that by the time it took your bullet to reach your target, he'd have time to crouch down and sqeeze a couple of shots back at you as your bullet passes overhead.

Actually, not every game on XBL is only one player. It seems to me that only Ubisoft has *blessed* (sarcasm) us with the limited 1 person per XBox deal.
That's my only peave with Ubisoft...and it irritates the hell out of me, too.

In Halo the projectiles had specific speeds and arc (affected by gravity) to be more realistic. You don't notice it though because the velocity of the projectiles is basically instantaneous.
With Halo PC you can slow down projectile speed and watch a sniper round snail its way across a map into a standing opponent's face. Funny to watch!

I think Zero Flaw was referring to an option in the PC version of Halo.

Yeah, thats a PC mod. I played a moded blood gulch once with two-way teleporters, its just not the same. I've seen that projectile one in action tho, its sweet.

Looks like fun, but, I mainly like to play the default way...I'm kind of a stickler like that. It would be fun to play around once in a blue moon with mods...but, I like the competition part of Halo the most.
