Every time I see a Fable picture I start crying, thinking about the passionate beauty a ground breaking game considering all the other RPG's out there.
I'm noticing all these new pics that are coming out, you'd think the game you be really close to being done.

I have a feeling that this game will be a dissapointment. All of these years and the finish product will not bewhat the game developer promissed.

When a developer talks about A.I. hype, I think it is hard to live up to. The quatlity of graphics in halo 2 are confirmed with screenshots, but it's hard to know about awsome A.I. without playing.

They can still be creamy...
Anyway, I want Fable, so much. I only hope that it lives up to the hype my own mind has created for it. Thats the whole reason I'm trying to stay as far in the dark about this game as possible. Also, I'm not crazy about the whole horn bit...I wanted to have a wicked badass evil guy, but if horns are involved...I'm not too sure.

I agree, this game is going to be hit or miss. Its gonna kick ass or its gonna suck terribly. The crew developing Fable has really hammered its revolutionary capablities into our brains, and I think that many gamers will be disappointed with this game when it finally comes out. I, hopefully, will not be one of those people.

:D New GDC Fable Hands-On from 1UP.com :D
After all of the hype and preview coverage 1UP and other game sites have posted on Lionhead Studios and Big Blue Box Studios' Fable, it seems almost anti-climactic to get your hands on the game . Personally, after writing nearly half a dozen articles on the Xbox-only RPG, I can rattle off Fable's feature list in my sleep: a vast, expansive world; a hero that grows and changes based on your experiences; townspeople who deal with you differently based on your actions; a wife you can cheat on; the whole bit.
But -- and this is always difficult to pin down with Lionhead products before they're released -- how does the bugger actually play? As it turns out, like your typical RPG -- one with a simple interface and an extremely large amount of options at your disposal.
As you begin the game, you're a seven-year-old kid who's fallen victim to a tragedy. Your family's been spirited away, and you've been taken to the local Heroes Guild by Maze, an adventurer who sees potential in you for whatever reason.
The opening scenes of Fable actually begin before this tragedy, with you as a child exploring the world and getting into mischief. This serves to introduce one of Fable's main features to the player -- the ability to directly mold your reputation. Early in the game, it's possible to peep through a window and stumble upon a man being, erm, romantic with a woman who's not his wife. If you confront the man about this, he'll give you a gold coin or two if you promise not to tell anyone about his adultery. Take the money, and you'll gain "evil" points for your extortion, a score that's displayed onscreen. (If you want to go all-out evil, you can take the cash and then tell his wife anyway, which makes you both a thief and a liar and sets off a chain of wacky cutscene hijinks.)
After your family's taken away, Fable shifts forward eight years, when your character's a young teenager ready to go on his first quest. You begin in the Heroes Guild, the spiritual center of the game and a location you're allowed to teleport back to anytime you like. The Guild's where you pick up new quests and build up your abilities (via an experience-trading system that should be familiar to RPG fans by now). It's worth noting that your character's outside appearance changes noticeably as your abilities build over time -- raise your physique level, for example, and you'll become noticeably more muscular around the shoulders.
The town Fable begins in serves to introduce the game's character-interaction system, which is among the most complex seen in any action RPG. When you approach someone, he or she will be bordered by a sort of aura, the color of which reveals his or her current attitude towards your character -- green for receptive, yellow for indifferent, and red for hostile. To start up a regular conversation, all you need to do is walk up and press the A button, the equivalent of a friendly hello. However, sometimes this isn't quite enough -- and that's where Fable's expression system comes in. Your character, as he grows, learns a vast set of facial expressions and body language, which you can assign to the Xbox controller's digital pad freely. These run the gamut from waving and flirting (nice for attracting ladies) to farting and the old one-finger salute (useful for provoking enemies). These actions can help change an NPC's attitude towards you, and that -- along with the reputation you build by completing quests -- could help open doors to new jobs and paths that would otherwise be locked away. (That's how you find out about your lost family, although you're actually free to ignore that plot point for over half of the game if you like.)
The world of Fable, sort of like Sudeki and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is divided into discrete environments, with doorways and bits of loading time connecting them all together. You have a map of the local area available at all times, and the logbook gives you fairly decent directions towards your current quest, so you'll rarely be completely lost. Enemy encounters take place in real time, as you swing your sword, fire arrows, or cast magic spells at your target with every press of the X button. Sword combos are possible, and chaining these combos together brings up a bonus that multiplies the experience points you receive at the end of the encounter. Targeting works smoothly in our time with the game, and the fighting seems very fast, solid, and engaging -- something of a surprise, considering Lionhead hasn't talked about this aspect of Fable much.
As for the graphics? While not quite as breathtaking as those first Project Ego shots from three years ago, the visuals in the small section we played revealed an attention to detail that's rare to see among large-scale RPGs. The forest environments were filled with neat effects, including realtime shadow-casting and trees swaying about, and we couldn't find any two NPCs that looked alike, even in the large town where Fable begins. Even more impressive was the animation, which there's gobs of -- your hero executes several different sword blocks depending on the context of the battle, and a remarkably wide variety of "flourishing moves" (strong attacks unleashed with the B button after a combo) are available. The spell effects, from the lightning shooting out of our neophyte magic user's hand to the small explosions that go off during a Berzerker spell, also didn't fail to engage the eyes -- and it all ran at a decent framerate, with no drastic drops seen in our experience.
While it remains to be seen whether Fable stays interesting in the long term, our first hands-on impressions left us excited all over again. The game's finally in a presentable state, and -- save for multiplayer and a host of other features -- nearly everything Lionhead promised is in there and playing an important part in the game system. It'll be fascinating to see exactly how important the whole body-language bit is when interacting with other characters. We've a feeling it could make the difference between Fable becoming a classic, or a flawed experiment.
Fable is due to hit Xbox store shelves in late summer. A more complete version of the game will be playable at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in May, so stay tuned for further coverage.

Yeah I too agree as well. When they say something thats 'revolutionary' you immediately think 'yep, thats perfect' but then as the time comes to an end, you're already having doubts about this. Nevertheless I really am hoping the developers will do a good job.

GDC 2004: Fable Update
March 26, 2004 - As Big Blue Box's long awaited Fable threatens the record for most consecutive appearances at a videogame show, the title's most recent appearance at the 2004 Game Developer's Conference had it looking like a full-fledged Xbox title complete with HUD, voice-acting and everything else that's supposed to make this the so-called "greatest role-playing game of all time." The game's godfather, Peter Molynuex made that claim more than two years ago and countless demos and interviews later, Fable not only looks like it may live up to the hype but it appears to be running well enough to make a surprising Summer 2004 release date. Again, those are Molyneux's words, not ours.

Summer is a long season in game development terms. I'm hoping for mid-June, but it could come out as late as September.
And to all you guys who've been saying you think it'll flop, I sincerely hope you're wrong (and am more than a little sure you will be proven so). Here's to hoping it lives up to at least part of the hype.

I guess he is now that I look at it hard.....ANYWAY, WOW what can I say about this game? Firstly, I can't wait, like most of you, and secondally, I condemn them for taking their time because it HAS to be incredable. I mean look at the different characters! I havn't seen ONE similarity besides the scars. Oh and the only downside i find to ALL of this...THE HORNS. NOT necessary, but definitely bad. Hopefully you can tell the little pricks to stop growing once you become sooo evil  !

I've read a lot about Fable, new and old, and it seems that you will be able to 'purchase' physical upgrades along the way (as well as skills and the like). I'm guessing the horns are one of these purchases. If not, I suppose they are only for the uber-evil. And if you've looked at some of these screens, it appears that the uber-good are surrounded by...*ahem*....butterflies!?!
I'm not too psyched about either if they are mandatory, though.

yea, I'm starting to get just a tad bit worried that maybe the folks at Lionhead are a few eggs short of an even dozen. :bang: They have kept us waiting all this time and they spend that time adding stupid crap like butterflies and horns??? WTF???!!!! I feel almost like I've been betrayed, it was and I hope still is going to be this awesome, open ended RPG where anything is possible, but it seems like they have been changing it more and more into something kinda, well........different.
It will still be great though, if maybe not exactly what I though it was gonna be.

Wow, that fifth screen shows the diversity in this game. I mean, what other RPG allows you to create a homosexual barbarian as a character? That kind of inclusiveness will really sell! Don't pass on BS rumors as fact just because someone told you it was true. Halo 2 as an Xbox 2 launch title is total BS.
1) its developed for Xbox, a totally different plat form (x86 vs PowerPC). That means its coded MUCH differently.
2) my favorite from an XBA memeber in another thread: what the hell are they going to do? Tell thousands of pre-order customers they need to buy an Xbox 2 to play the game they already paid $50 for?!?!?!
