First next-gen console game unveiled

Digital Extremes' Dark Sector will debut on the Xbox Next or the PlayStation 3--or both.

Today, Digital Extremes gave the public a taste of the future of gaming when it released the trailer for Dark Sector. According to the Ontario-based developer, the sci-fi action game will be released on "next-generation consoles." That makes it the first specific title released for a next-gen platform other than Death Jr., the PSP game deck title shown of at this year's Game Developer's Conference.

While Digital Extremes representatives flaunted the fact Dark Sector would be a next-generation game, they would not reveal whether or not the game would be released on Sony's PlayStation 3, Microsoft's Xbox Next, or both. They did stress the scenes shown in the trailer are made up of in-engine graphics, not pre-rendered CG. The company also did not divulge the game's approximate release date.

The slick-looking preview showed a high-tech commando evading power-armored guards inside a space station, much like a futuristic Splinter Cell. The trailer ends with the words "New Engine. New Game. New World." on the screen.

GameSpot will have more details on this exciting title as they become available.

Yea, most games have these awsome cut scenes, but really really bad graphics and animation, I will get happy when we see some ingame things. I just hope bungie opened their dev kit :hump: :hump: :hump:

I'm not really impressed. Looks like an average PC game to me.

What game are you playing?

Other than better everything, I am specifically looking for better animation in next gen graphics, I think great animation on anything(to an extent) makes it look much better.

The video is much better than those screenshots.

The news at ign is these are entirely in game, and not prerenders.

The trailer, we're told, is not CG, nor is it pre-rendered in any way. According to Digital Extremes, the footage shown here is entirely in-game engine. The new engine is built using potential specs from both future consoles, which are unofficially due sometime in late 2005 or early 2006.

Even tho it's in game, cut-scenes are better than actual play!

Mark another one down for unimpressed. They're nice but I still see jaggies, Half Life 2 and DOOM III are looking better IMO.
