Believe it or not, this is a relatively new genre, dating back only to the Sega Genesis and a great game titled "Herzog Zwei" (undeniably the first RTS game ever)

Over the years, RTS games have become quite popular. I'm sure you've heard of Baldur's Gate, Myth, and of course, the Warcraft series. :)
