The first title to feature Xbox Live 3.0 comes from Midway. We're loaded with details inside...

Midway has announced that MLB Slugfest: Loaded, the upcoming Xbox and PlayStation 2 arcade action game, will support Microsoft's new Xbox Live 3.0 features. According to the game's producer Adam Boyes, the title will offer user-created online tournaments on Xbox Live.

The tournament feature, which is just one of many new features included in Xbox Live 3.0 (also known as Tsunami), will allow gamers to create custom tournaments for four, eight, or 16 players. These player-created tournaments can then be left open to the public or kept private for a particular group by inviting users on friends lists to join the competition.

"It doesn't work so it's one big elimination thing," Boyes explained. "It actually works so it's round robin, and in the end it shows you the rankings of all the players, and the top guys win and so on." With all the tournament action taking place, the possibility of Midway offering prizes to topped ranked players is real, but Boyes leaves those details to the PR department. "I know we've done it in the past with other sports games," he said, "so I'm pretty sure they're working on that."

Although MLB Slugfest: Loaded will be available for the PlayStation 2, players on Sony's system will not be able to compete in their own custom tournaments. Midway is however, running the game's online mode as a massive public tournament featuring stat-keeping and ladders to recognize the game's best players.

With the latest version of Xbox Live offering exciting new features through all game genres, it should be a fun time ahead for fans of the world's largest online gaming community. Midway will kick things off with MLB Slugfest: Loaded when the game ships this June.
