First, I don't yet have Xbox-live (was holding out for EA)...and I am getting ready to move at the end of the month. The new location has Cable (Comcast) and DSL (Verizon), but I am not sure which to get for live....
Verizon is a good $10-15 cheaper per month and I am told that a central office is only 1000 feet from my new place....however, is lag worse on DSL?
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

If you have access to cable...get it.

Definitly go with the cable dude. Believe me, well you don't have to but I'd say the 10- 15 bucks is worth it

depends where you live actually
i have dsl and when i'm playing bf: vietnam on my friends server (he rents a co located server) i get pings of around 20ms.....
I'm about 7400 feet from the Central office and i get 5.5 - 6mbit download and almost 600K upload.
the fastest cable in my area is charter and they are only 3mbit down and 128 up (supposed to go to 256 eventually).
So it all depends, some locations cable is better, some locations dsl is better.

like i said, it depends on where you LIVE. How many different broadband providers have you used? I've used TCA Internet (Merged with Cox), Cox Communications, Time Warner (Roadrunner), Comcast, Charter, SBC DSL. Out of those, Roadrunner and SBC DSL have been nearly neck and neck in quality. But i have to give the thumbs up for this dsl package just for being twice what roadrunner is in terms of bandwidth (both have comparable latency)

I have to agree with shannon on location...I know some folks with comcast cable dsl who have complained about low bandwith...they run Windows Media Player and stream radio of the net and play a game like yahoo dominoes and suffer major slowdown...
I have SBC Yahoo DSL and my only complaint is that theres too much service provider stuff for me to do and read!
The cold thing about it is that cable dsl is usually 10-15 bucks more a month than phone DSL..what up with that?

Like I said, my main concern is cost, I will probably use the internet more than Live...though that may change depending how addicted I get :) For internet purposes alone, the extra money isn't justified for cable.....
Is there a major difference playing something like Crimson Skies or Rainbox Six 3 on DSL compared to Cable?
Thanks

In most cases, a negligible amount for actually playing. But is nice to have speed for hosting capabilites. And you will want to host.

The problem is with DSL I dont want to be out here wondering around looking for a measurement of substations jump stations, the postitioning of Jupiter and also in my area Cable is Faster than DSL in Most NY areas.. 128 for DSL services like Verizon UL and around 384 UL for cable if not some better...

sadly enough...it looks like DSL is better then cable here....
for cable one cable...for 40 bucks (that is if you have cable tv...50 without it) you get 1.5 down and 128 up
and Qwest dsl..for 40 bucks you get 1.5 down and 900 up...
but then i have qwest dsl... for 30 bucks i get 256k up and down...my dad says "its fast enough" BLAH at least it runs live :-/

Like Shannon said.. it's the location you are in...
between cable and dsl the latency is going to be partically the same. BUT depending on the location different providers provide different speeds.
In my LOCATION Verizon DSL offers 1.5mb down and 128kb up ... but Adelphia CABLE offers 3mb down and 256kb up. And it's only 10 dollars more then DSL. (and I'm getting it for the same price for the first year because of the deal I got when signing up)
So I choose Cable because when I am downloading a few hundred megabyte file I can now get it in less then half the time. I am now getting 350kb/sec download speeds where I was getting 150kb/sec on DSL.
For gaming you aren't gonna see a huge difference. But if you are wanting to host your games then the more upload the better.

I'm on Cable, 3mb down/ 128k up. Not a good host, but I get solid speeds about 70% of the time (playing in Casper's server on the other side of the country doesn't help the percentage :p )

Hey I'm trying to get high speed internet is there anything around the price of America Online dial up? And how does it work do I have to go buy another modem and does someone have to come to your house I'm trying to figure this stuff out because I don't know anything about it so any info for a n00b would be helpful to me lol.

Different areas have different plans available.
I picked up Cable Internet through Earthlink for 39.95 per month and the first few months it was 1/2 off.
Also check Verizon.

$40 a month is generally as cheap as I've heard. Pay $60 or $70 myself.
Most providers will give you a modem if you commit to a year or more, other than that, they sell you one. You can always look for a better deal on your own, but some services (such as AOL) actually require that you buy their hardware.
Someone may have to come to your house, but only to flip a switch or something in your box. W/ this last one, no one had to come, but I think the first time they did. Some places offer professional installation, but unless you're challenged, it shouldn't be a problem to hook everything up on your own.
Hope that helps.

I had Verizon DSL for a few months, and it was horrible. I was getting an amazing 40K/Sec download speeds. :(
On top of all that, i had to put "filters" on everyone phone for that line.
So i ended up getting comcast cable and its great. I get about 400K/sec down and XBL runs great. But you need to by a router if you plan on sharing your connection with you PC.
But like shannon said, it all depends on your area.
