For the most part, everyone has heard the news. Some are happy, others are elated; there are a few that could honestly give 2 limp squirrel nuts about it. Myself, I'm in a amazingly tranquil state of Blah right now. There was a time when I honestly thought this sort of news would make my day, end my life, and give me something new to aim for in online gaming. Wanna know the truth. I'm not impressed.
I know what you're thinking. I'd probably be thinking it, too. Than again the proof is in the pudding. I own Madden 2004, NCAA Football 2004, NBA Live 2004, & NCAA March Madness 2004. I also own ESPN Football & ESPN College Hoops. Here's what I have found. Some EA games have great mass market gameplay, but Sega tries harder. Sega takes risks, and without Sega there would be no EA on Live. Now, would you believe the PS2 is the reason I'm making this post?
I'll try and explain. I work at a Gamestop. We are allowed to check out games from time to time simply to have a point of reference. I had the oppurtunity to check out Fight Night 2004. I opted for the PS2 Version simply because I wanted to see if I could get this crappy network adaptor that I found in the trash outside the store to work. After a little work, I actually was able to login and get things going. That's when everything I've heard about EA's online presence was put in my lap in all it's misshapen, long server response, oft disconnect glory. Yes, I was able to eventually get in and fight a good match against a damn good opponent. I came out the victor, but that sitll couldn't soothe the Xbox Live withdrawls that their server woe's gave me.
Fast forward to tonight. I invited my cousin over so we could talk, and get some rest before we head to the gym tomorrow for a good workout. (note, said cousin is an NBA LIVE 2004 FREAK--I TRIED TO PULL HIM TO THE DARK SIDE, BUT HE STILL CHOSE THE PS2, HE'S NOW REGRETTING IT, BUT EH) I noticed that he still had his copy of NBA LIVE 2004 for the PS2. I was actually kind of curious as to how good online competition was. At any rate, this time I can honestly say I got a good dose of what I think is coming to the XBOX. The game was slow and choppy. It lagged the whole time, and there was login screen after login screen. The whole time, I'm thinking to myself.
THEY WANT SOMEONE TO PAY FOR THIS.
I noticed on one of the announcements today that a representative said that EA will have control of the servers that are used for the titles. All I can say is. I'm not impressed.
As far as I'm concerned, EA doesn't have the balls to be the best in the game. That's not hard to say, and it'd be easy for even the biggest fans to admit, for every loyal $50 bill that I've laid down, I might as well have been paying Sega. I'm not saying I need people to jump through hoops for my money, but atleast act like you're trying.
If you don't like my opinion, play the games like I do, and ask yourself the same questions I was asking myself, then come back and read my OPINION again. I just don't feel the same playing EA's basketball series the way I did back in 95 with Live.
Damn, I wish I were 15 again. !Live is just too viable of a service for the high standards that is has now to be cast away.
