Question about Driect connection

I'm a bit confused about the direct connection option, i would prefer this option but i'm not fully sure how it works.

I'm thinking all i need is an external modem which has a cable leading from it going into the phone socket and another coming from the modem going into my XBOX, but there's another part of me is thinking how is this possible because how does the XBOX know i have got broadband when its not connected up to my PC.

I would be greatful if you could answer my concerns as i am itching to get onto XBOX live just that i need the right info.

Xbox is a PC, you can plug it DIRECTLY into your modem.

NO PROBLEMO.
