I haven't been here a while, but I know this is one of the top fansites and prob. has the best members I've come across in a forum (err...for the most part). So I have to voice my concern here.

Shadow Ops: Red Mecury set to be released in 2-3 weeks looks absolutely amazing. The graphics are amazing, the story looks breathtaking, and the mashing of realism and movie thrills looks stunning. Originally I saw only 8 player for XBL but now it's at 16 from a couple sites (Videogames.com being one of them).

My problem is, I've seen no posts or anticipation for this title. The only concern I have with this is no games or a severe lack of games on XBL. I rented Top Spin, wanted to play a doubles game online, but there were 0 games (as were a couple other XBL titles I rented). So I'm hoping with this thread you will at least rent it and if you like it, spread it on to your other friends. I'd like to log-in to XBL and see tons of rooms and not be forced to join a lagged filled room.

So here's an overview of the game and decide if this may or may not be your cup of tea. If it is, at least rent it. I'm getting tired of playing RS3 to get my FPS fix, I'd like this to be my new FPS fix till Halo 2. I think everyone agrees we need a game to help pass time until it's release. Onto the overview:

Single Player: 24-26 mission campaign revolving around the fathomed Red Mercury. Game starts off with the bomb exploding causing mass destruction. The game then start 3 days before the explosion and you must stop it from going off. The storyline looks incredible. The cinematics and script have a hollywood feel to it while the combat and movement have realism written all over it.

Multiplayer:

Split-Screen - 2 player co-op with 10 original missions seperate from the single player campaign. I don't know if this is final, but in one of those Making of Videos they had a game that was 4 player split screen so 4 player team modes might be in as well.

System Link/XBL Both feature a 16 player max (the number has changed from 8, to 12, and most recently 16 according to Gamespot.com) with modes including:
-Plant/Defuse the Bomb
-Escort the Hostage(s)
-VIP
-CTF
-DM and TDM
-Plus 1 other unnamed mode

The game is built on the latest Unreal engine so the graphics are amazing and most likely will have some sort of ragdoll effects.

Check out www.atari.com/shadowops/ . There's not much to do there but it gives a bit more info. If you need gameplay footage check out IGN, they have a little and Gamespot has bit though they have this stupid downloader thing you need before getting any videos.

So is anyone gonna give it a look now?

I've loved what I've seen about this game so far. I really like the whole Red MErcury idea...thought that was very creative. Gamespot's got a really good preview here: link (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/shadowopsredmercury/preview_6099649.html) Sounds like it's gonna be a winner.

wow, i'm liking all those different xbl game types. Almost like a breath of fresh air compared to rs3's DM and TDM only. I'll rent this first, but if i like it i'll buy it :)

Gamespot posted some new gameplay videos last night. The co-op was so-so but man the single player vid. was intense with lots of shouting and your AI CLEARLY tells you what they are doing so you don't have to turn around and make sure they didn't get caught on a wall or somethin. Co-op should be lots of fun though the video doesn't show it. And 16 player XBL? Man, I wish this game had clan support.

I just got my new issue of OXM, and it came with a playable demo of Shadow Ops. Not too good. Its a very simple game, almost no different than the 20 other FPS on the system. The graphics are not up to snuff in my opinion. Plus there tends to be the same, duck behind a box, lead to the left (or right respectively) and shoot a brown person. While I have nothing against shooting brown people, it does tend to get repetitive. I was excited about this game and its Live play, but after the demo it really knocked my interest.

mrmp3
06-04-2004, 10:17 PM
I've heard a lot about the demo. Is it from the final product or one of those "things may change before final product" demo? If it is, then any hope I had for this game may have drifted away.

Jet

Well, all demos pretty much have that tag on it that say "this is not a final product" but seriously, its not a matter of framework, or small graphic problems. Its a matter of the base gameplay that seems dull and repetitive. All in all I would say that I can't expect anything different for the final build.

mrmp3

sounds like they spent tons of money on sound and story and forgot about gameplay. Thanks for all the feedback. Guess I'll have to wait for somethin else to top RS3...

JuniorBrady

I actually really like the preview on Gamespot. I can't imagine that people would like the game so much but dislike the demo. I'm still gonna gte it and find out for myself.

Yeah. You all remember that HALO demo from like 7 months after the release of that stellar game. It didn't hinder the shine on that Gem at all. It's all about how the game feels.

JuniorBrady
06-08-2004, 02:45 PM
BTW, isn't this demo really old? So that they've had tons of time to adjust whatever may have been wrong with it? I have a feeling all these glitches that people are talking about will be worked out when the actual game goes on the market. At least, I hope so.

Sounds sweet. Since I'm tight on cash at the moment, I'll have to listen to what you guys think. I just bought Prince of Persia though...that game is sweet.

Anyways, this and FSW will battle for my next purchase.

This game does look cool! With some awesome audio and music!

mrmp3
06-08-2004, 05:06 PM
I'm still gonna rent it. It's just I've heard "I hate it" or "This is awesome!" from people so I'll fall under one of those categories. Plus the demo was only one level and I still haven't seen any XBL play in action so that'll probably be the deciding factor in purchasing this or not.

JuniorBrady
06-09-2004, 09:35 AM
I'm definitely gonna get Shadow Ops before FSW...just think it looks like it'll be more fun. And BTW, what happened to our Pistons last night? Kobe was hitting circus shots.

Well I just e-mailed the guys at Zombie. Guy responded within a couple hours. Real cool guy too and no automated BS response. My question concerned if clan support would be in this title. Unfortunately, it won't but he shed something else quite interesting...

From: John Williamson : :: development inquiry (Shadow Ops)

I wrote:

Well I for one can tell Shadow Ops has the best sound effects and immersing music I've seen in a long time. A 9.5 or 10 in my book. My friend the game didn't feel right so he isn't getting it. What an idiot he is. 2 player co-op, 16 man XBL? Fool.

Well I hope all that sucking up worked and you'll answer this question. Is Shadow Ops going to feature clan support on the Xbox version or not?

Keep up the good work on your games. Can't wait till next week!!!

He wrote in response:

No sucking up required, but thanks, glad you like the audio. The making of videos on the www.shadowopsgame.com and the demo disc, show how the audio was put together.

We've got a ton of maps and split screen co-op, but no clan support in this version. It is on the "to-do" list for the sequel.

So there you have it. No clan support BUT i put in bold the word "sequel". I guess they feel very confident it will be a kick ass title.

That's definitely cool that they are so confident in the game. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. I'm getting awfully antsy waiting for it to come out.

06-13-2004, 09:38 AM
I played the demo ofthis game last night. I will say that the audio is out of this world -very, very immersive. There really is nothing quite like the sounds of distance automatic weapon chatter, shaded over by muffled explosions, in an urban environment. Can we say Blackhawk Down'ish from hell?

The graphics are acceptable. It's no Rainbow 6, it's no Splinter Cell, but it's definitely better than Soldier Of Fortune II. I would say it's the median between Rainbow 6, and Soldier Of Fortune II. Physics are alright, nothing spectacular, but will work.

The gameplay appears to be as mentioned by another post -repetitive, typical FPS stuff. Good thing I like that. Lot's of action in the demo -from the time you deploy from the Blackhawk, until your screen goes white at the end of the demo. However, the framerate totally sucked!

I realize this is a 'demo', and the finished product will most likely be better. But, for $50, I hope the hell it has been polished up drastically. I will go ahead, and just purchase this title when it comes out. To be quite honest, Rainbow 6 is still about the only thing I play on a regular basis, and I am sick to death of it, however I keep returning to it. So, heres hoping we have some new competition.

Im pretty excited about this one too. I havent bought an xbox game for awhile now and have decided this will be my next purchase. I'll still might rent it first though because like everyone else I havent seen any online play yet in action and thats a big deciding factor with any games I buy nowadays. All the reviews did say its really fun online though.

JuniorBrady

I am 98.7% sure that it comes out today. I don't know why you would have only seen it one place. I'm really excited and will be all over it as soon as it arrives.

Man, I really wanted this game bad.. first I was going to get Psi Ops but then found out about this game and decided to pick up Red Mercury instead!! I thought the demo was pretty sweet! I can't get Red Mercury now, atleast for awhile. I just found out I'm in some legal trouble, so cash is tight right now, but I plan on getting this game as soon as I can.

I'm gonna be getting mine today I think, along with Psi Ops. I'm really excited, but I'm sad at the same time b/c I know I won't see the light of day for the rest of the summer probably. I'll be the palest person in the room for sure.

Who knows, I might find a way to pick this one up. Atleast I'll hear from you guys how good it really is first. As for Psi Ops, my other half picked that one up for me yesterday (the release date) and oh man is that one awesome game!!

06-16-2004, 05:32 PM
I got it today, i got the last copy at the ebgames close to me. There are a decent amount of people on live, and the game is ok. Not great, i'd give it a 6 out of 10.

ok well ya for more proof that this game isnt get liek n e publicizing when i picked up mine it was out of a box that the guy forgot to open at eb games and was full of its shipment of the agme! i mean that means no one would know it was out unless they kind aresearched it first...

ok well ya now on to my impressions:

man i played thsi game on live and damn is it fun i mean its really thrilling and i didnt get so into a game for a while ( cept FSW) and my only gripes thus far r that there is a small selection fo guns and for TDM u can camp the opposing teams spawn and they cant do N E thing bout it!!

but those r jus minor things, o and the nade controls r kinda strange, but ok ya if u want a fun live experience i can pretty much suggest u guys gettin it, although dont be expectin RS3 here.... think more along the lines of unreal championship in a cooler setting

ya and one thing that may bug soem ppl is the lack of ranking but thas only for the really competetive people, but i dont mind that much but ya ok ive only played live so i cant tal;k bout single player yet but ill try 2 soon...

JuniorBrady
06-17-2004, 07:54 AM
Mine didn't come yesterday, so i assume that I'll get it today. It sounds like the Live stuff is pretty fun though, huh? Were there a bunch of people on there or not a lot? I was pretty upset last night when I didn't have it.

WoOtY BaLLa
06-17-2004, 11:57 AM
it seems liek there are a decent amount of ppl palyin it so finding a game wont be hard, and if u get it just add me to ur friends list and we can own everyoen 2gether screamin XBA owns all!! lol ahhahaha :p

JuniorBrady
06-17-2004, 12:08 PM
I'm in! I will tell them that you're some guy I met on the corner...then watch as they whine and moan about how the homeless guy keeps destroying them. I can't wait to see how they react to that one!

I played this game, and it's easily not worth $50, it's pretty intense, and cool, but it's also one of the most choppy games I've played in a long time, if not ever. It's nothing we've never seen before (nuclear holocaust, lets see, Syphon Filter, both Splinter Cell's, & Metal Gear Solid), and the graphics are just above par for the course. I didn't play it live since I didn't have time, but I want to. Once it's $20 i might pick it up, but by that time Halo 2 will probably be out, so I'll pass on this one, and so should everyone else. Worth a rental though, since single-player offers a challange, and it pretty intense.

JuniorBrady
06-18-2004, 07:26 AM
Alright, I definitely like this game. I just like the feel of it more than naything. It's not prefect, which is cool in a way, b/c it seems more realistic I guess. I don't know. It is fun, and to me, that's pretty much the bottom line.

Brutus
06-18-2004, 09:58 AM
Yeah. I finally got the Demo Yesterday. It fealt good. The enemies were all hate-able guys.
You know, your hero's are only as good as your enemies, you know! I think everyone wants to kill terrorist's. I like it. Playing to many games now though. I'll help it become a hit later, bro...

JuniorBrady
06-24-2004, 01:13 PM
Yeah, the demo is nice, but the game itself is better. at least I think it is. Even though it got some poor reviews, it got some good ones too. It's at least worth a play thought at least once.

Arven
06-27-2004, 09:50 AM
The reviews I have seen have been 6's and 7's. I was never really interested in this game to begin with though.

TXB gave it an 8.8. They got it right.

I'm on Level 17 of 25 right now, and except for a few indoor levels that were kind of "same old," I've had a blast. The enemies get very brutal later in the game (don't judge by the first levels), and the story kept me hooked. Audio is fantastic (you must have surround sound).

I'd put this in the top 3 FPS for Xbox, after Halo and Max Payne 2. I don't like realistic shooters (Clancy series) much; I have a lot more fun with games like this.

Arven

Because the developers' main focus was making a cinematic experience, you absolutely must have a widescreen HDTV and surround sound, to appreciate this game. I'm betting a lot of the negative press is coming from gamers who are either a) focused on multiplayer (hello, the focus is SP), or b) playing on ordinary TVs.

Brutus
06-29-2004, 09:21 AM
I've got surround sound and I thought it sounded pretty good. Not as good as games like Brute Force, but alot better than others.
All I played was the Demo and it fealt like a reincarnation of a Medal of Honor. How is the whole game? How does it make you feel towards those terrorist baddies?
A good game makes you terribly despise them even being alive! (Halo) How does this stack up though?
I might buy it today. I'm trading in the worst game of the year: Driv3r

The XBL on this game horribly sucks. The host advantage is amazing, and you cant see the bullets so you cant tell if its bullet lag or just ****ty aim. On xbl it takes like 2 clips to kill a guy, and than theres always the random glitches and the 1 minute load time. Also, theres the ***** glitch where you cant hear your team.

This game is a POS on live cause it wasnt supposed to be on live, they only added live because microsoft needed another title to promote xbox live with.

The game probably could do a better job in that area. I never felt anything much toward the enemies, except a desire to defeat them and stay alive. Sure, there were times I said expletives toward the screen as I blew holes in someone, but I never really felt a strong emotion, generally speaking, towards the enemy. But then, I usually don't. It's a rare game that can actually draw me in, emotionally, to that degree.

for me it just depends on my mood i guess. sometimes i take a few guys out, all casual and collected, other times i'm cussing and kicking things. "that's right you mother ******* terrorist, eat **** and die"

Yeah, I feel anger toward individual enemies I'm fighting with, but not toward the whole group (like for instance toward Al Queda or something). I think I felt a little of that in the original Medal of Honor, but not since.

I totally have it with HALO. Even now, after just seeing what they have done to earth... I'm on a personal mission to kick all of their a$$es! Must protect earth. I wonder what that first level is going to be like. Right after you come out of that zero gravity free fall and do some damage on one of their ships... That's going to be so much fun.
Then there's Guilty Spark...
