Okay, I was holding off on this, but I talked about it in the Off Topic Lounge.
Look at THIS (http://www.bungie.net/images/News/InlineImages/metalboxshotz/backmetalbox.gif) picture. See the gigantic structure sticking up? It looks like a space elevator to me.
Think about the Halo 2 Announcement Trailer where Master Chief takes that elevator, and Cortana says, "Reinforcements are on the spoke." That elevator connects Earth to the space station Master Chief jumps out of. Does it all make sense now? I think it does. ;)

damn...maybe that guy stole the idea from halo..
anyway, that elevator in halo is in the year 2,500, or was it 3,500?
anyway, its a long way to go

lol, if anything, bungie got the idea from that guy, people have been talking about space elevators since before console games were a dream.

Well, it could be...either way, Halo 2 is going to be golden!

Thats a great idea, a space elevator eh...
I tried to look up and see if "spoke" was some military key-term, but i couldn't so that is actually a pretty good assumption. That was a long elevator ride, must have nearly killed him with the music.

hahahahaha.
Whoa, ive seen this pic before...many times...but i never noticed that thing back there. crazy! oh , and what makes you so sure master chief and cortana were even on a space station and not a space ship?
i guess, theoretically, that could be a possibility, but right now, i take any presumptions about halo 2 (story presumptions, mind you) as just hypothetical conclusions. And that in no way would anythingn be certain until nov. 9th....

Because Joe Staten said so. :)

Q: Do you have a particular favorite moment or aspect from this demo?
That would have to be the re-introduction of the Elites in their insertion pods. I wanted to create a moment that would have as much emotional impactful as the Chief launching himself out of a space-station, but more visceral--a moment of exceptional danger that, if it were to happen during the course of a level, would make anyone who's played Halo think "holy ****, how am I gonna fight my way out of this?!" And, well, nothing says danger like an Elite with an active energy-blade, let alone six like-armed Elites.

okay. Well , what characteristics of a space station?
space station
n.
A large satellite equipped to support a human crew and designed to remain in orbit around Earth for an extended period and serve as a base for launching exploratory expeditions, conducting research, repairing satellites, and performing other space-related activities.
sat·el·lite Audio pronunciation of "satellite" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (stl-t)
n.
1. Astronomy. A celestial body that orbits a planet; a moon.
I think i wasnt clear. i was just trying to say that space station, or ship, both would be different if they had anythign connected to its subsidary basis. So, if a this "spoke" is indeed a connection between earth and a space station, then it could not have been the same one that master chief jumped out of, because master chief jumped out of a space station, apperantly, and what you are describing is something else.
Furthermore, the place where master chief jumped out of was rather high. WIth covenant cruisers flying underneath, and nuclear explosions happening all over the place, i dont think that spoke would survive, In fact, having such a long fragile column emmanating from the surface of the earth to orbital status, would probably render it weak, making an easy first target.
also, with pelicans that have aereonatic capability, and sheeva equipped black hawks, i think, that logically, a space elevator, or the need thereof, would be very backwards efficient.
Again, a viable theory, but a theory, non the less.

That space station is probably an Orbital MAC weapon, and the "elevator" transfers power from generators on Earth. It makes sense to me. :)

the orbital macs were orbital....? what power source on earth can there be that cant be in space? and if it was a mac gun, then it wasnt the only one. If i remember correctly, earth and reach are the most defended colonies...(or, uh, home planets...). Reach had , i think (cant remember that well), but approximatly 20 mac guns.
Now, as the master chief looked out the window, you couldnt see any spokes.or othe mac guns for that matter. ALso, if such a week connection is supporting the mac gun, then a weak blow could render the guns useless.
IF earth does have mac guns, i think they would be higher in orbit.
Hmm. DId you see the height of the new mombasa protectorate? it has multiple levels. Can it be more likely, that if this is indeed an elevator (even if its not its primary use, i see no better way of making your way up it, therefore, if it isnt an elevator, it should have one in there), or cunducter of power, that it is for a local city, and would not stretch out to space?
Just a thought....
either way, you could be right. If really have no proof but logic. again, i wouldnt presume anything about the game's single player campaign until i fork over my $54.11 at eb....

Thats my only thought on the story.

GAH?!!?!?!?
hehehe. ;)
i think its safe to say that it is far enough in the future for most things to be a scientific possibility.
