im not sure if this is possible or not. I dont know anyone who actually uses HPNA. (networking using home phone lines)
if you can find an adaptor that allows you to connect an ethernet device to your network, then yes, it should work. if not, another option would be to connect your xbox to your PC via ethernet and then bridge your two connections. (this feature is built in to windows xp)
like i said, i have no first had experience with hpna...but if you post more specific details about your current network setup..i can try to help

HomePNA is the high-speed, reliable networking (LAN) technology that uses the existing phone wires in your home to share a single Internet connection with several PCs in your home

Well no because he can have a HPNA network with a broadband connection. It's just that he can use the phone wiring system in his house to connect the computers in his network. Though he could use dialup if he wanted to.
First he has to have broadband to even pull off XBL.
Second he has to have a compliant router/gateway that can accept an ethernet connection. Even though his network is HPNA, the Xbox won't take that, and he has to find a more tradional way to hook his Xbox into the netork. There are HPNA compliant routers that have Ethernet connections as well for Ethernet Devices.
There are even some with WiFi points.
To alleviate any connection issues he'll most likely have to forgo the entire HPNA system and just go straight into his gateway before it gets dissemenated into the HPNA scheme. Makes sense? I seriously doubt the Xbox will handle a special HPNA network from the other end.
If he wants to make it work and he has the required broadband, he'll have to spend some money mainly on that router with both HPNA and Ethernet.
Or he could go the extra mile and get the HPNA gateway/router that has a WiFi point, and get the Wireless-G Adapter that's both 802.11g & 802.11b Wi-Fi.
Either way, his best bet is to not screw with his entire network and just go wireless.
The Xbox autoconfigures to the router and he'll most likely have better results just connecting to the router before it goes into the network.
