Hey, Im new to this message board and i own an xbox and i have a dial-up connection. i want xbox live so bad, and im trying to see what my best options for a high speed connectoin are. i can get DSL, but its kinda expensive at like 40 a month. I think my best option would be cable, but i just checked the website and there are like all these diff. packages i can buy. the cheapese one (30 a month) has a 256 kbps Downstream Max speed and a 128 Upstream max speed. then the packages go up in price and in speed (512,1,536). Please tell me if this cheapese package is fast enough for xbox live and if there will be any Lag problems if i get this. i dont have a lot of $ so im trying to get the cheapest thing, but i wanna make sure it will be good enough too. please help me out and i appreciate all the answers.

you should be fine most of the time... i have 256kbs and 128 up.

Eh, its not the best.with maxed out rooms(12-16)... but its great with a little bit of people...(1-10)

most of the time .. dedicated servers, are you best choice. Thats what i do :) join dedicated servers

256 kbps isn't very high just to tell you. The only DSL and Cable connections in my area(Other than high-speed lite connections) are all over 1.5 mbps. My particular connection is usually around 3-3.5 mbps. If you'd list the prices, it would be easier to help you out. All I can say is that 256 kbps is less than 5 times as fast as dial-up.

Damn you can get cable that cheap? Mines gonna cost either 42 or 50 bucks a month for cable. But then again i'll be getting like 3mb down. Your definately going to want a better connection, especially if you want to play Halo on XboxConnect. Its the bare minimum and you could get away with a couple people in a room but 10 bucks more for a better connection would be worth it.

I have SBC Yahoo DSL, 1mbps up, 256kbps down, only 27 a month :cool:

You probably won't have to worry about lag on Xbox Live. Just don't expect to host any games with that upload, and try to stick to high speed or dedicated servers

around here, the fastest we can get is 1.5mb down, 128k up...with either cable or DSL. (it was limited to 768/128 but they recently increased the download speed) and that worked fine for live...but that is alot faster than what you are talking about.

even with just two xboxes over xbconnect..i still get alot of lag with halo. so unless you can get 256k+ on your upload speed..you will get lag on halo with xbconnect.

you could always try it, and if it isnt fast enough, invest in the next highest speed until you get it where you want. once you have the connection, upgrading the speed shoudlnt require any new hardware..just a phone call to your ISP

With the cheap one, running at 256, you'll be fine. There will be a lot of servers you can't join, but there will always be some you can.

I know because this summer at my host family's place they are running at 256down and I have had no problems when I do get to play on LIVE. I just get a limited selection of servers to join.

just go to sbc's site and put your number in the line prequalification area (assuming you live in an SBC state). You'll find out if you are qualified (line conditions, distance, ect...) to recieve dsl or not.

i have SBC DSL but 1 thing if your going to run your xbox your PC on the same modem your going to have trubble. the lil modems they give you are too small and they will burn up in about 3 days so your going to have to get the networking bundle if your going to run the pc and xbox at the same time. i had 2 PCs and an xbox on one of those and the aftermath wasent too preaty

I SBC Yahoo DSL and I'm very happy.I've never lagged in a game on Live.I also play alot of Medal of honor with my comp and my ping is always below 25,while everyone elses is like 50-60.I live in Addison wich is about 5 miles away from Richardson,Tx,wich is where one of the SBC yahoo buildings is so I guess my internet is pretty fast.

Your DSL Internet Throughput (bits/second)

Your Throughput

Download = 1.273 Mbps
Upload = 218.41 kbps

Oh and I got my DSL free because down here in Dallas,the workers went on strike,so we here at home have got it for 4 months free.And after that we pay 27 bucks.Its all good.

The key to LIVE is UPLOAD or UP speed... anything LESS than 128k... if you share it, be careful...if anyone uses the computer or something else you're sharing with, it WILL lag...

Generally you WANT 256k UP or better...

Well, here's how I figure it. Get what you can afford, but the best deal up there is Express Pro Plus at roughly 36 kilobits per dollar. Express Pro is roughly 31 kilobits per dollar, Express is roughly 13 kilobits per dollar, and Easy Access is roughly 9 kilobits per dollar. That's all in downstream, since upstream really only matters if you are hosting the game.
