Fellow Addicts,

I'm ordering Xbox Live and everything else I need tomorrow so it will be here when I come back from my Holiday.

But I'm having trouble finding a good router, I can't find one without much lag and compatible with Xbox Live and within the price of £65. If anyone has a link to where I can buy a recomended router (UK) I'd be really greatful. And I'll have a game with you when I come back.

Thanks :)

I've always been a fan of Linksys, bit more expensive but Ive never once had a problem. Alot of people also like D-Link as well.

I just found this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DG4WG/qid=1092165562/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-4708657-9901425

It's wireless, but apparently lag free and compact. Looks good, just need a second opinion really.

That looks great man, but it is not a router. If you had a wireless router in your house already to share the internet out, then you could use that to hook up to your Xbox and not have to string wires to your router.

I have an 802.11g D-Link Wireless Router and I am more than happy. I have the cable modem strung right next to my Xbox, so have my Xbox plugged into the router with a regular cable. Then I have a wireless network card on my computer so I don't have to string wires to/from my computer. Also when friends come over with their laptops and wireless cards, I just add thier mac address to my routers security and they are surfing the internet from where ever is convinient for them. But unless you are planning on using a lot of wireless stuff, the wired version of this router would do you just fine.

This (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008DOYN/ref=pd_sim_ce_dp_2/026-2148130-1506033) is the wireless one and this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005KAC7/ref=pd_sxp_elt_l1/026-2148130-1506033) is the four port wired one.

Hope that helps.

I have the Microsoft MN-500 Wireless router (802.11b) I love it. It's easy to use, easy to configure and it accepts and configures other MS devices easily and automatcially like my Microsoft MN-250 Wi-fi NIC card for my laptop, and my Microsoft MN-740 Xbox adapter.
It was around $50 (USD) and the "G" version isn't that much more expensive. It has 4 wired points and accepts up to 156 wireless devices, has the Broadband Networking Utility and a full security suite. This has been the gateway to my network for 9 months now and I've yet to ever have a problem with any connection or computer or anything.
I'm happy I went with the decision to go with all Microsoft products.

By the way, if you have or want the MN-740 wifi Xbox adapter you need to do the firmware upgrade and you won't have any lag what so ever.

That is the adapter to go along with a router like

WRT54G (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008DOYO/qid%3D1092238968/026-7287828-4435647)

That is the router that I use and recommend. From what I hear the new firmware even lets you do bandwidth management so that the XBox and Phone have higher priority over web surfing.

I got mine for less than $20 shipped via an online auction.

It was an MSN-100 router, so it's Xbox LIVE compatable.

Yours doesn't have a wireless point though. Right?

No, it doesn't. However, I connect it to my Net Extender which IS wireless and works flawlessly.

So my entire wireless set-up costs around 60 bux!!! :hump:

Dang, I should've consulted you all for my Xbox Live plan like this. I looked at the wireless stuff and I thought it was gonna cost me over $150. So I spent $70 on wire-connection. Oh well.

Personally...I hate wireless...I prefer solid connections. I have the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL router...It's very good and I've never had a problem with it. But you're going wireless so I guess this one's outta the picture. :)

MN-100, right? If so, that's the one I have. The only flaw I have with that, is that the WAN port is 10, not 10/100 - which is what I ended up just buying, because with my connection, it gives me every bit of speed I can use.

That's ok because your broadband doesn't even run close to 10 mbps anyways :p

It's all good, cuz once I get the 15/2 fiber line in there, you can just go back to that baud style crap you have anyways

That one seems good, but don't I need some sort of wireless port for that? Or is it standard on most PC's?

If it's all fine then I'll go with that one, but thanks for everyones help.

Be onlive on my birthday (September 2nd) :)

The wireless would be another option if you didn't want to run cabling to your pc and xbox from the router, and yes, you would need to buy wireless adapters. If you want to run cable than your xbox is all set up and your computer might have an onboard ethernet card so it could be good to go as well. If not the computer LAN cards are only 5-10 bucks. I mainly tossed that one out there since you had posted a wireless game adapter that you wanted to get. If you don't plan on ever doing wireless you could probably save 5-10 dollars on a wired only box.

Oh right, hmm.

What about this BT Router, £20 is cheap, wonder about the quality though..

I say the hardest choice would be between linksys and d-link.
I have tried both of them, and they are both pretty good. Right now I'm using Linksys, and I would have to say this works a bit better than d-link.
BUT if you dont wanna spend too much the cheaper one is d-link.

I would go with a Dlink, it hasn't given me any trouble when connecting to XBox Live. If your Xbox will also be wireless I got mine hooked up to a DWL 810+ and that has also worked flawlessly.

is a router a required piece of equipment if your only using xbox live?

jschelm
09-07-2004, 10:21 AM
only if you want your computer and your xbox on the internet at the same time
