August 12, 2004 - According to Variety, War of the Worlds has been suddenly fast-tracked for a summer 2005 release, meaning the adaptation of the H.G. Wells' classic goes before cameras this November.
The Paramount/DreamWorks pic will reunite Minority Report colleagues Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. David Koepp penned the script for producers Kathleen Kennedy and Paula Wagner.
The move has temporarily shelved two other projects. Mission: Impossible 3, which recently lost director Joe Carnahan, will now lens in summer 2005 with Alias creator J.J. Abrams making his feature film helming debut.
Spielberg's '72 Munich Olympics terrorist drama Vengeance (a.k.a. Mossad) will now most likely film next June. Tony Kushner (Angels in America) was recently tapped to rewrite Eric Roth's screenplay.
Deals for the $100m+ War of the Worlds were struck in what Variety called "48 hours of frenzied negotiations." The special effects-heavy project will have a mere 10 weeks of pre-production time.
i bet its gonna be a disgrace to Wells...but i'll still watch it:-D

What!?
I think they're doing everything right so far. I'm just thankful they didn't try to modernize it and have it set in 2004. They've got Cruise, who is OK, this role's not going to demand much so that's not a huge deal. He'll sell tickets. I'd rather see Norton play the role though.
Anyway, Spielberg's in on it, this movie SHOULD turn out to be pretty good. Atleast that's my hope, I've been waiting for War Of The Worlds to be made into a movie for awhile now, good to see we don't have much longer to wait.

spielberg and good movies don't coincide anymore.
Here's exactly what will happen in war of the worlds- aliens will attack the world in g-rated style, tom cruise will fight them off with a sappy band of friends, and then cruise will step out of an airport terminal and see new york city and be like, omg, new yrok city is beautiful! tears will flow
that's frekin speilberg.

i think it sounds awesome. there are so many ways they can go with this movie. the one thing that worries is me is how they are trying to cram this movie together in a year and have it released in summer 2005??? are they insane???

89% of the movie is gonna be computer generated anyway. I'm surprised by now they haven't figured out a way to engineer actors with computers yet. That'll take care of contract disputes!! I'll see just because I'm curious how they'll manage to **** this up...

Well speilberg is better than that rat anderson....
If anderson directed it....
- Poor character development
- Aliens come and blow stuff up in slow motion and matrix effects.
- Tom cruise has no fighting experience, but starts flash kicking aliens
- Tom cruise fights the leader of the aliens and pile drives it.
- Tom turns to think he saves the day, but the alien leader tries one more attack that ends up blowing up the entire mothership.
- Tom escapes on a motorcycle.

I respectively disagree. Spielberg still makes great movies. AI wasn't so great, but ppl shouldn't flame him for the rest of his life because he made one bad decision. The Terminal wasn't a let down it was just a different kind of movie. Minority Report was brilliant, and Tom Cruise just proved that he still 0wns with Collateral. This movie has no excuse to be bad.

I too respectfully disagree. SS made an spectacular war movie with "Saving Private Ryan". The first 24 minutes was just pure insanity. In fact D-Day survivors give it a resounding thumbs up for it's realism.
Even though the script was very average with little depth the film was saved by a brilliant director.
I can only imagine what SS could do with chaotic battle scenes of Martian Invaders going mano a mano with the world's military forces.
