If you don't want to run cat5 cable around to the router than you will need a wireless adapter solution for the Xbox.
The major networking companies all have a wireless game system adapter set.
But I have the Microsoft MN-740 wifi adapter, and since I updated the firmware, it has been great and I have experienced no lag or dropouts. Granted, my adapter is 6 feet away from the router, but I have other friends with it, and they're set up room to room and have equally good results.
It'll come with an antenna unit that plugs into your Xbox's ethernet port with a short length of Cat5 cable.
Plug it in and run the CD it comes with in your Xbox if you haven't already updated fully to Live 3.0. If you already have Live 3.0 don't worry about the CD, just go into your Xbox's dashboard and enable wireless networking. (Make sure it's enabled on your router as well.)
It'll usually autoconfigure everything and it'll ask you which network is yours and you input the WEP code if you have one.
It's all really easy and nothing to worry about. For extra security, I know the MS MN-740 works with MAC filtering on from the router and it accepts 128bit WEP just fine.
I've been using it for little while now with full security and I've never had a problem since and my network has remained uncompromised.
