Stealing stuff in Fable

I am wondering how to steal stuff from shops.

My character has lockpick and steal, but when I try to use either expression an exclamation point appears above his head and nothing happens.

you have to hold them down, but beware if their level of that skill isn't high enough it takes longer thus getting you caught most of the time.

also make sure that the little eye ball is almost shut or shut all the way before you do it.

I see there is a shoplift expression as well,but I don't have that one.

Hmm.... a way to get money very fast: get the shopkeeper move out and get him drunk. Return back to steal anything you find.
