SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The Linux operating system is coming to Sony's Playstation2, joining Crash Bandicoot, Madden NFL 2002 and Harry Potter.

Of course Sony's new offering for its videogame console will cater to a relatively narrow crowd: developers and hobbyists in North America.

The $199 kit, which will be sold at Sony's Web site starting in May, includes a 40 gigabyte internal hard disk drive, network adapter, keyboard and mouse, and ``Linux (for Playstation2)'' Version 1.0 on two DVDs.

I really don't get the use of this yet. I know that some people have turned their PS2 into a web server  but for that amount of money you could build a much better computer and install linux on it.

What else will this linux kit be able to do and is it worth $200 for the kit plus $300 for the PS2?

Would you really want a web server with 32M of RAM? Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should. I'd much rather have a $500 PC than a $500 PS2/Linux hybrid.

geez, they really expect people to pay 500 bucks (ps2 and kit thingy) when they can get something that is better for 300 bucks? i mean who really needs 40 gigs to play games online. online gaming on the ps2 will suck too, the ps2 supports 56k, which is a bad thing. online gaming is useless if you have anything less than cable or dsl. i should know, i once had 56k and my ping never went below 1000 and with cable, my ping rarely goes above 100, which is still pretty good cause when its at 100, i dont really notice that much of a slowdown.

Oh, wow, no probelm at all, just pay 300 for the system and another 500 for the internet package...REAL smart...

the reason they have a 40 gig HD is because you need to install your games to the HD to play them

Isn't the linux kit different from the actual harddrive add on and the internet package to play games online? I was under the impression that these were all different products geared for different things.

What does this thread have to do with us XBox users?!

KNOW YOUR ENEMY.

I know that's a stupid thing to say; I don't want to establish a stupid "us vs. them" mentality, but you know what I mean. It's important that we know what we can about the other consoles so we can be educated, and know what we're talking about when we get railed in general chatrooms n' stuff for having the better console when everyone else is jealous. :)
