Eh, nothing special. Up until the half-way point, there is nothing special or different, just a mildly annoying guitar. Past that, not bad.

that better not be what we hear on the title screen. I'm gonna be ****ing pissed if it is, I dont listen to metallca so it sounds ****ty to me. No offense but I think that sounds like a disaster. It would be fine on some levels but if thats in the main menu then bungie made a big mistake. wheres the old halo music. people loved that.

Maybe some of you didnīt like it because you love the original the way it is or you donīt know how to listen to a guitar

I think the guitar is amazing, and chances are it may be in the title screen. Check the quote from TXB:
Today, Nile Rodgers has released a new music sample from the upcoming soundtrack. This time, the first song you'll hear the first time you play the game: the Halo Theme Mjolnir Mix, featuring the guitars of Steve Vai. Are you ready to listen? Then pop up the volume to the max!

Dude, just do us all a favor, here and on Live, and stick to playing Halo 1 on XBC - cuz you're doing nothing but b1tching about everything.
Btw, just like AITD posted - this is the intro music. It's what plays at the startup screen - so enjoy, and learn who Steve Vai is for your own musical knowledge. He is teh 1337.

I love Guitars as much as the next guy, it just sounds to average, and repetitive. I loved the Rock Anthem for saving the world from the first soundtrack, it was a unique twist to the original. The original simply doesn't sound like ANYTHING out there and it makes you feel like you can take on the most powerful force in the galaxy all by yourself. The original manages somehow to pump you up for anything, and ALL my friends agree. The string work and layering of the original is simply suberb.
(Listening to the new one again)....., the guitar stands out more than anything. way too overpowering. How the guitar is even brought in I think could use some serious work....it simply doesn't flow together. Why is his guitar twice as loud as all the other string instruments. This version simply isn't nearly as impressive as the original. I am highly dissapointed by it. The original hasn't left my car stereo in 2 months (Ninja Gaiden is also on that disk) but I don't even see myself picking this copy up. Every song I've heard is below average (but thats my opinion), with the incubus garbage, and the breaking benjamins crap (or whatever there name is), what the hell were they thinking? I saw a poll on the music you can already sample, and only 25% liked it, while over 55% disliked or hated it. I love Halo as much as anybody, but Marty O'Donnell really should have just composed everything himself. If the first theme was done in 2 days, I could only begin to speculate if he had 3 years.

Its Rad , yes I said rad deal with it , Im a metalhead so I like it , as a title screen soundtrack its cool , actually in the game I think it would lose some effect , theres a small "metal" part in Halo 1 , on Silent Cartographer when your battle your way back up from the cartographer , I always loved that part ,but if the guitars were over done on Halo 2 it would loose atmosphere enviromental effects wich would disturb the "flow" of the game ,

From what Marty O' Donnell said in an interview about the soundtrack, Steve Vai's guitar work is present in the game's score as well. (For those who don't know the difference, Score = Background Music, Soundtrack = Music Containing Lyrics, usually licensed songs from bands). Personally I don't mind it. Think about that song kicking in when you enter a room containing 2 Hunters surrounded by hordes of Covenant. I think it would fit quite nicely.
PS: Do the hunters always appear in doubles in Halo 1? As far as I can remember there was always a Mr. and Mrs. Hunter. Would Bungie be cruel enough to include a hidden room with 2 Hunters mating in Halo 2? Scary Thought.

All in all, Steve Vai is the man.
Let me guess, I should be listening to Eminem, Ludacris or what Linkin Park...please. :p
Classical and Jazz is my preference. Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven is actually what I prefer to listen to,(but that also probably doesn't matter in YOUR opinion, who knows, you seem pretty arrogant) there hasn't been anything mainstream that has come out that is "musically" well written or original since Pink Floyd (my opinion). I prefer quality produced original work, not some rehashed rhythms I've heard in 20 other songs before, always talking about how they screw their woman in a very uncomfortable place.....like the back of a volkswagan.... :hump:
I have a multidisc cd changer in my car and thats why its stayed at number 2 since august.
For all those that think this song is well written, I had a discussion with one of my friends last night, and asked what his opinion on this song was. He said it sucked balls, and was some of the worst and uninspired guitar work he ever heard. He almost crapped his pants when I told him it was Steve Vai. He LOVES Steve Vai, loves him, I couldn't even express enough how much he loves him. He feels like Steve Vai probably said a "video game soundtrack, just another gig" Do you think he takes video games seriously? He said it sounded like he recorded that and hadn't even heard the original, and the guitar work was just placed over Marty's track.
What does that tell you when a Steve Vai addict says the mix sucks a fatty???

I haven't bought a CD in over a year. I wouldn't mind it being in anything except the main menu. The begining with the guitar was great but then it started to sound like something out of a retro game. I dought that is the main menu theme and if thats what txb thinks they're wrong.

Sorry guys, Steve Vai owns you all when it comes to guitars. He pioneered the usage of 7 string guitars and he even created his own mode complete with chords and scales. 99% of music utilizes the Dorian mode, well.. he was uber enough to create the Xavier mode. Anyway, he's a living legend with a guitar.
Anyway I was very pumped up to here that a legendary soloist such as Steve was tapped to participate in the creation of the theme song.

Whats up with the hostility around here, I make a comment about the soundtrack not nearly being as good as the original and ALL you immature kids can't even hold an intellectual discussion, you all immedietly turn to name calling, thats a good way to help your point of view. Sorry, but from what I've heard of the incubus "follow" track, and the breaking benjamins track,(and the mjolnir mix for that matter) It doesn't even hold a candle to the tribal beats put down by Marty in the original. Its the future here people, remember the video on 343 how the marine says "If the covenant want to wipe out this part of my history, fine by me!!"(talking of the metal Sargent Johnson was playing in the pelican), Those marines didn't like it, there wrong too correct?? I don't want to listen to music I hear on the god awful radio while I'm trying to save mankind from total obliteration, considering it takes place 500 years in the future. The first soundtrack simply didn't sound like anything currently available, and when you heard the songs during gameplay it just melted perfectly in the backround and ALWAYS set the stage and gave the game a quality ambience.
If your going to tell me that Steve Vai didn't write the guitar solo than YOU ARE THE MORON. Idiots. I NEVER said he wasn't an excellent guitar player like some of you seem to assume, I just feel that this particular remix isn't very inspiring. Considering the fact that I produce music, and have played string instruments for 15 years, I would assume (could be wrong, assuming can make people look like asses, like you jjak have already proved), I have a 1up on you. LISTEN to how the Guitar is brought in, he attempts to throw a little riff before he gets started, and it isn't even in coordinated with the melody's in the backround, and EVERY producer knows it should be balanced, The volume for the guitar work is easily twice as loud as it should be. I'm not trying to be nitpicky, its what just stood out the most when I first listened to it. I'm very critical of my music and I hate when something could have easily been fixed and isn't.
Thanks for letting me have an opinion, its nice to see everyone here is mature enough here to acknowlegde other peoples point of view.
Why can't you guys accept the fact not everybody likes Metal? Is my view all of a sudden not good enough.....because I don't like unoriginal music (makes perfect sense). I have just as much a right to point out my point of view on this subject as ANYBODY else here, considering I've been a Bungie fan since Marathon, and bought Halo on the launch date, and still play multiplayer matches frequently.

It didn't suck balls, that's the point. The whole solo thing fits quite well.
I wouldnt mind hearing this on the title screen, it still has the classic monks and the guitar adds a more action feel to it.

It just sounds like something you would hear on a nintindo game. I wouldn't mind hearing it in the game but not the title screen. I wouldn't be surprised if it popped up in some intense action scene soemwhere in the game the game, at least in part anyway. I doubt it will be the main theme. The guitar work is excellent, could've been at little more imaginative on the rhythm work I thought. But the lead playing was Vai at his (usual) masterful norm. I really enjoyed it.
