View Full Version : Ragdoll Physics
Anyone else think that the decals and physics in Halo 2 effing rock?
I was playing Rumble Pit on Midship a little while ago and I really noticed the decals in the game. I lethally shotgunned someone against the wall and the physics took over. The model slumped against the wall, leaning slightly forward, with a massive, bloody shotgun blast on the wall. Awesome.
It's also satisfying to launch someone with the energy sword lunge and watch them bounce off the wall like a sack of potatoes, splattering blood everywhere.
Plain fun just watching your body react to the physics when you die. Once I got nailed by a frag on the bottom of Zanibar's fan. I committed a betrayal, so my respawn timer was particularly long. The fan scooped up my limp body and it rolled down the blade as it turned. Then a grenade made its way on top of it and I watched my body get launched.
One of the most entertaining aspects of the ragdoll physics is when you tag someone with a pistol or two in the head and they flip backwards down some stairs or over a ledge.
Le sigh

i agree i do enjoy seeing the physic of the game.

its awesome when you die and watch your body fall from step to step until you reach the bottom.

It's not the best ragdoll I've seen... but it's better than Deus Ex and RS3's ragdoll.
Half-Life 2 has the best, FarCry coming in second.

I think the ragdoll really shows itself whenever your body gets caught in the anti-grav lift in colossus.

I agree it's really cool. Black Arrow had some really good rag doll effects, and I remember that standing out in my head. But after playing Halo 2 over and over again, I've seen some cool things happen.
One thing that cracks me up is the death jitter. You know for some reason every now and then when someone dies, one of their arms goes into a spasm, or flops around like a short circuit.
They did a good job with a lot of the visuals in Halo 2.

haha. the death jitter, so thats what its called?
I noiced that the ragdoll for an elite, is different from the human. They have different joints, and a different anatomical structure, so naturally, they move around differently. which is awsome.
Also, when you dead and you land ina "lift" ? your dead body rises up, limbs as limp as a raggety anne. uber cool.
hmm, farcy has some issues with explosions. I bet half life 2 does have great ragdoll though. Halo 2's ragdoll is far form perfect though. The ragdoll engine only begins when you start to hit things while falling vertically. In other words, if you get launched at a nearby wall or rock, you wont react to it, but when you start falling vertically, then you bounce off of the rock. Not cool, but satisfying none the less.

I tweaked the respawn time yesterday just so I could do that, killing yourself in line with the win-mill on Zanzibar is real fun, shows of those physics as well as giving you a laugh as it sweeps you up to the top and drops you to the floor in a horrible crunchy scene of death. ;)

Ragdoll Physics rock!
Just as long as they don't over do the physics to the point that the body could completely bend in half or arms and legs could bend ackwardly like some games... I like the realism in a certain extent but to much of it just looks too fake that it actually kills it for me. Just like an obvious ragdoll that they would use instead of a stuntman in a movie... Which sux.IMO. :D
The body twitching is a nice touch with the Covenants... It gets me all the time. I know its not like the flood... But I usually shoot them again for good measure. :)

it was cool one time when on the level lockout where there is a anti-grav lift i guy weas following me and i chunked a grenadwe down the lift and it killed him but the explosion plus the lift sent him flying to the middle of the level. I was laughing so hard becuase the guy was using proximity voice and talking **** and then i juts blew him halfway across the level.

yeah thinking about it... rainbow's were cool, but unrealistic... like when you died... you just went limp and did the splits... not as real as halo 2 of half life
go havok!

my fave is when you splatter someone with the ghost and they just FLYYYYYY forward. Or when you lunge at someone who's above you, miss, and fly so far you fall off the map.
YEah, that rocks.

okay, neither half life 2 nor halo 2...or even raibow 6 3,'s ragdoll comes form havok. The only game that has ragdoll form havok is dues ex and thief 3.
Halo 2 is an upgrade from halo 1's engine (which i beleive is called the blam engine), half life 2 runs of source, which has uber smooth physics, and rainbow 6 3' runs off of unreal tournament 2k3.
so yea, just thought i should clear that up to anyone who reads ol' blinxies post and uses it later in an argument or somehtng...

Halo 2 uses the same physics engine as Psi-Ops on the Xbox. Read it in OXM.

Thanks for clearing that stuff up Covenant...
But honestly, these are like the best and most fun to mess around with physics i've ever seen in a game. Awesome stuff (even though i haven't experienced the physics in HL2 and FarCry)

They're definitely an improvement over the physics in Halo 1, for such a great game it was a let down to see half your body disappear into a wall after you die.
Some of my favorite examples of the physics in Halo 2:
-I was in multiplayer and a guy was running directly for me with SMG's when I sniped him dead center in the face and his head whipped back and his legs flew out from underneath him.
-In the campaign I was on one of the later levels and facing a brute when he did the 'weapon throw down' and started his ape charge at me, I shot the hell out of him and at the last moment his body went limp and his momentum kept him going, causing his head to crash to the ground and his body to slide on its side for a few feet.
-Taking down a hunter who was killing a friend in co-op. His arm was on the upswing and in the middle of this motion his feet gave way and his body went limp.
