First, with ranking... can you actually lose a rank? or can you just go down to the bottom of it?
I did ****ty last few games on Rumble Pit, but I didn't drop down from rank 5, I just satyed at zero percent progress on rank 5.
Also, with guests... The answer is probably no, but is it possible to hook up two XBoxes, and have your friend on his own xbox sign on under the XBL account on yours as a guest?
Did that make sense?

You can drop a rank. We dropped from a low 4 to a high 3 in minor clan battles because we had a bad run. Just a lot of factors happened. It was like 3 games in a row, but we where able to recover it the next day and advance quickly.
As for the Xbox question.. Doing a system link over live is what you just essentially asked. One other Xbox is still a system link. No, guests only on the Xbox with the live account.
But, from what I understand if you want to, you can do Xboxconnect and system link a few xboxes over the XBC network to other Xboxes as long as you stay within 16 players.

Here is the definitive answer on the "dropping a level" question from Bungie:
Alright, is that it? Almost. A few of the more astute among you have noticed that, at odd times, someone will be higher level than you are yet have less experience than you have. This can happen because experience and level are not completely wedded, as that chart we showed you earlier would lead you to believe. Instead, when you reach a new level for a matchmaking playlist we help you stay there, even when your experience points wouldn't otherwise justify it. Basically you'll stay at your current level, regardless of experience, until your experience drops below the midpoint experience required for the previous level.
This helps avoid the frustration of hovering right at the boundary between two levels, constantly switching back and forth. It also gives you a little peace of mind when you reach a new level because you know you won't be slipping back down any time soon unless you have a really bad losing streak.

Just a stupid question, the little green/yellow bar on the side marks experience percentage right?

If he is talking about the same bars when you hold back to see the in game stats then it is lag. The easiest way to tell how far along you are on a level is to look on Bungie.net. Otherwise I am pretty sure the direction that the arrow is pointing on the circle around your current rank shows you how far you are to earning the next level.

How can you find out your over all level? Is there any way to do that other than asking your friends?

What do you mean by over all level? There is no such thing in Halo 2. You get assigned a different level for each game type.

I thought overall was like the level that shows in your friends list next to your name.

I'm pretty sure the direction the arrow is point is just a way of expressing the level you are on, and it doesnt change until you go on to the next level.

I think that number is your highest for all gametypes, but I have been wrong before in this thread (see comment below) so I could be wrong on that as well.

I just double checked on Bungie.net and you are correct.
