is it worth spending $50 (or maybe putting it on my christmas list) on this game without a live subscription? first of all, is the single player campaign good enough to merit a buy? is there split screen multiplayer? is there some sort of bot system that can keep me interested after i play through the single player?
if anyone could give me an evaluation of this game (minus live play, as i said), maybe compare it to other games such as halo 2, that would awesome. thank you

Put this game at the top of your Christmas list! It has a few bugs, but still is one of the best shooter/stealth games ever released (IMO).
Supports up to 4 player split screen and the single player campaign will keep you occupied for a good while as well.

The single player campaign is very good. It's also very hard

Yea dude, the single player has other modes besides the normal campaign, they have all those things like recon, firefight, and other modes, with special variations (i.e. beat the whole level using a pistol or something like that...)
Personally, I have yet to play the actual single player on this game.

If you're looking for realism, go somewhere else. This tactical shooter has been transformed into an arcade game. You can't even directly control each character, and the only ''planning'' you can do is tell them to go somewhere on screen, and even trying to plan is useless, because enemies' actions are scripted and they usually spawn, unlike other Clancy games...the menus are completely different, the music in the menus is now rock and roll...wtf...and they have turned all the characters in the game into main characters, not just soldiers on a list...
I have decided that this game ****s on everything Clancy games used to stand for - tactical realism.

Okay I suck because I am having a hard time getting used to the new view. I keep getting smoked when I go take over the base.

you can switch to the first person view at any time, but I highly recommend the 3rd person. It lets you see over rocks, shrubs, etc without exposing yourself.

Thank god they made the switch. The reason I hated the original GR's single player game was I got so friggin bored and the retardedly slow pace of the game it was annoying. The new fast paced action oriented gameplay is a welcomed change.
The single player is much, much harder then the original and the missions are HUGE! Everytime I think I'm getting near the end I die and have to start all over. Hell I haven't even finished the first mission yet.

Sheeyt you know you can save as much as want, along the way. I think the only problem w/ the SP is I never gave the squad any commands. I played the whole campaign and never issued a single command. Some people may say that's cuz the AI is so good, but I like giving the order, and being able to switch between team members. I also miss the individual side tasks (finish firefight w/ Sniper Only, etc) from GR and GRIT so I can claim to be 50/50 General
Finally I hope they fix this "network Problem" or wutever soon, I'm sick of playing for an 1 hour and restarting

Thus completely shredding the entire point of the ghost recon series - tactical realism.
