Every xbox is xbl ready out of the box.

The very first series of Xboxs are not Xbox Live ready, in the sense that XBL isn't install on the harddrive... however, when you buy Xbox Live you'll get a disk that will install XBL on your Xbox. But yes, they all are compatible with XBL.

I dont think xbox live comes with a cd anymore when I got mine around February this year it only came with the headset, mechassault, and the 12 month subscription card

Any of the newer XBL compatible games will allow you to create your account. Just select Xbox Live from the game options and most will say that you don't have an account and ask if you want to create one... It will then download the necessary files to the HD.

yeah when xbox first came out it didn't have the xbox live tab, but once you bought the starter kit it'd download the necesary files and update the dashboard.

on the newer xbox's it's already done you just create an account.

xorg-the mechassault disc has the same stuff as the older xbox live discs incase someone with an older xbox buys live.

Did you try and connect to XBL? It should install the options for you that way. If not, contact 1-800-4MY-XBOX (800-469-9269) to have them ship you an XBL setup disk.

Yes, you can play Live on a version 1 xbox. Even though there is no Xbox Live tab on the dashboard, the xbox does have network capabilities built in.
The set up disc that comes with the starter kits and the setup disc that comes with the MN740 wifi adapter installs the Live 3.0 dashboard into the Xbox hard drive and creates a tab.
Any Xbox Live game will do the same. It will detect if there is an account or not and if there isn't and you want to set up live, it will initiate the network protocols and auto negotiate itself onto the internet and update itself to the latest Xbox Live dashboard.
You might have to put in some details during the auto setup if the Xbox can't figure it out for it's self like DNS addresses, so you should already have that info ready just in case.
The number 1 easy way to get this done if you want to get Live for the first time on a launch box is get the starter kit that has a headset and an install disc.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Well I am almost there... I put in a copy of mech and told it to goto xbox live and it updated the dashboard,,, then went on the internet and updated some more I think... Here is where I am stuck... I am actually trying to connect via multi link to my neighbor with halo (and other games).. My neighbor is using the older xbox (now updated) and connecting to my wireless router with a WGA54G game adapter. My xbox is hardwired to the router.. I see that his XBOX DHCPed a 192.168.1.163 address and I see mine at 192.168.1.164 but the multilink doesn't seem to see each other when you go and select profiles etc..... also (and this maybe normal) I cannot ping either xbox from a PC on the same network..

HHHHEEELLLPPP....Need to Kill my neighbor on halo..

Thank you

I may have an answer to my problem and thought I would share it. I called the Big M and they (after transfering me and hanging up) (twice) told me that the two copies of Halo must be incompatible. They said to look at the discs and they must look the same. I don't have the other disc here, but they were bought 2 years apart probably. We threw in mech and it worked.. Hurray... I asked them what to do... why should I have to buy (and maybe get another one that won't work) again they put me on hold and then click..... Well at least I have the answer I think.... any ideas on maybe a fix without buying another copy???

I really don't see how two copies of the same game are incompatible with each other. I'm talking two store bought legit copies.
XBC is a system link tunneling program that runs through the internet to connect Xboxes through the system link feature and I played it on my old Xbox with a launch copy of Halo and then later on when I replaced that Xbox with the Halo Xbox, I played XBC Halo a few times with the copy that came with it and had no problems. Shortly there after I went on to get Xbox Live. (just a natural progression)
I'm not sure whats going on there.

So what I'm trying to understand is your setup. Are you trying to use XBC to play system link games over the net, or are you trying to play system link games with your neighbor connecting with a wi-fi network and not using the net as the link between the two?
I've never done this personally, but I know you can go through your router and create an ad-hoc network and that's supposed to be the easiest way to hook two xboxes together wirelessly. But I've never done that so I can't explain that very well.

I am using a WGA54G (wireless linksys game bridge) on one xbox to a WRT54G wireless router and the other xbox is hardwired to the router/switch. They are both DHCP a IP address 192.168.x.x from the router. I went to EBgames and they of course never heard of the problem but since I am a good customer they said they would swap out one of the copies. They opened the used disc draw and sure enough some discs had different pictures, just like the Big M said.... I am going down there tomorrow to do it and will find out if it truly works... Let you know... Yes they are two legit copies.. No I am not going thru the net.. Just of the local subnet (192.168.1.x).. I would like to see any info on a adhoc netowork... not sure what a adhoc wireless is.. (have seen the option) and I am not using XBC (not sure what that is but have been looking for some software to extend a system link over the net)

Probably your best bet is to use the Xbox Connect program (XBC) on your and your friend's computer to work out a system link game without actually being plugged into each other.
I'm not sure how to pull off what you want to do any other way.

EDIT:
After reading up a bit on XBC, you both install it and create log in accounts on your computers. Put each other on your friends list.
Fire up XBC and your Xboxes and one of you make a private room and invite the other in and start up a game.

That's got to be the easiest way I can think of. Plus you can do any system link game and even join others.

Yeah, same here. All I had to do was select "xbox live" from the game and it would go to the dashboard and install. Mine was one of the first batch of machines so I don't get the cool "xbox live" into when I go online like my friends does. :bang:
