I seriously doubt they will look like this next gen. Plus, I seriously doubt EA will be the ones pushing the hardware to its limits. But here's hoping!

I don't see why next-gen games are so difficult to believe that they won't look like this. Look at the graphical update from N64 to Gamecube.

That's a pretty massive jump right there. So I don't see how that big of a jump seems so impossible. Comming from EA though, I don't expect to see these kinds of titles from them...

Agreed. possible? no question. From EA? Bout doubt it. They aren't known for really pushing graphical boundaries into the excellent or extraordinary but rather in the average to good range.

Those are some pretty pictures.. could you imagine playing a game that looked like that... wow! It'd would cause a visual orgasim.

And that is a very impressive graphical jump between those two RE games.

This game will be amazing graphically. I almost **** my pants when I saw a video of the engine, and I'm sure it will look better in the actual release.

There's a video up on IGN supposedly showcasing what an Xbox 2 game 'should' look like. If the next gen systems can do this kinda stuff... Ever since I saw the first FMV when I busted out my PS1 for the first time, I was wonder when we'd get to play games that look 'that good'. I guess we might see where those improvments stand come next year if all the hub bub doesn't turn out to be a big bag of bull...

it's gonna happen sooner or later. i suspect the jump in graphic ability for games on the next consoles will not seem quite as large as the leap from n64 to xbox, but there are some factors that could make it happen. processor power is obviously abundant now, and the graphics chips continue to make leaps forward. the machines we'll play on will be more powerful, but so will the machines these games' graphics and artwork are done on. add in the cheaper and more ready supply of hdtvs, which will make the work worth looking at. it could combine for some fmv level gameplay. i hope that's the case. i can't wait until ff games play like their fmv looks. or until whatever racing game that ea pic is from looks just like that in gameplay. i just hope it happens before my hand/eye coordination completely disappears.

In theory, won't it get to a point where you can't improve graphical power because the next step up is reality?

Being designed for hardware that will be in the next gen consoles. It is a good representation of what the next gen could/should be able to do.

I can't wait to see what they do with the unreal 3 engine. :drools:

I'm willing to pay more money for a next-gen console. I'm not sure how high I'd go, but I'd pay more than $300.

I think of it this way: pc games demand an update of hardware probably every 6 months. After all that, you'll spend a ton of money on video card upgrades. The next-gen consoles should be cheaper than all that upgrading...

maybe if you buy the bottom of the crap pile...

My CPU, RAM, and Video card are over 1 year old. I can't remember how long exactly but it's possible it's been over 18 months. But just to be safe I'll just say 12 months.

And games like HL2 look amazing. The game looks better on my PC then anything on Xbox, and it runs smooth.

I'm tired of people always saying "I don't want to upgrade every 6 months" ... then don't waste 150 bucks on a piece of crap video card that barely runs the current stock of games.

developers can make really awesome looking games graphically even on "lesser" hardware compared to a pc. They only have one configuration to develop for and can make content for that one configuration really shine instead of spending time making sure their content works on thousands of different setups. Look at how good some of the xbox games look even with only 64 megs of a ram and a 733mhz intel processor. Nothing as good as a $3000 pc system, but for $150 who's complaining?

AlBoogy
12-04-2004, 07:13 PM
Youre crazy if youd pay over 300 dollars. As much as I love my XBox I hated that no more then a few months after I bought it, the price went down. If it is sold for more then 300 I think Ill wait it out.

Nah, either CG, or a vid/pic of the engine.... I mean gameplay ingame, cause the two are quite different.

The only difference between what is in those pictures, and what will be on the screen when they are released 2-3 years from now, is a HUD. In the case of Unreal 3, you can add in a nice lush environment and some arms holding a weapon or two.

Those look amazing, but just think, each game with that quality of graphics is going to take time to make.

Each level in a game, each character, is a piece of artwork that takes time to create. I can't imagine how long it's going to take to create each game. Think about Bungie making a game that's 3 or 4 times better than Halo 2. I could just be ignorant when it comes to developing time, but it seems like It'd take a hell of a lot of time to get it all in working order.

Especially another Elder Scrolls, I think it was mentioned in a review that the new world would be smaller than Morrowind, so maybe that's what we'll see of most games? More detail, less content. Hopefully not, but we'll see.

What is the name of the program Microsoft made to make it easier for developers and cut down development time? If its as good as they say it is then it shouldnt taken any longer then it has this gen.

I don't doubt at all that next gen games will look this good. every time a new generation of console comes out there is a phenominal difference in graphics. For example: NES to SNES, or SNES to N64 or PS. PS and N64 to PS2 and Xbox (we'll leave game cube out because game cube graphics suck.)

To me the biggest leap was from N64 to Dreamcast. I never wanted the DC until I saw NFL2K and Ready to Rumble. When PS2 came out, it wasnt that much better then what the DC was pushing. Remember, it was out a year before PS2 debuted.

Shrew, here's a little info about the scope (landwise) of Elder Scrolls' 4: Oblivion. As well as a storyline teaser.

Oblivion is a single-player game that takes place in Tamriel's capital province, Cyrodiil. You are given the task of finding the hidden heir to a throne that sits empty, the previous emperor having been killed by an unknown assassin. With no true Emperor, the gates to Oblivion (the equivalent of hell in the world of Tamriel) open, and demons begin to invade Cyrodiil and attack its people and towns. It's up to you to find the lost heir to the throne and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel.

Cyrodiil is the big provence in the middle of the map.

Thats exactly what I think next gen will be about. A little better graphics but the real difference will be in the draw distance and size of the levels/ worlds. I also think there will be little to no pop up,crazy looking backgrounds and lots of things happening on screen at once.

Yeah but a few eye candy games couldn't hurt. Like a sick adventure using those unreal 3 graphics (that doesnt suck like Fable, with depth and great gameplay)
Hopefuly with XNA develpers can make games like Fable was suppose to be without wasting time and budget messing with other things. (and maybe even finish a Halo game...)

You make a valid point about graphics quality/content. Although the next gen consoles are going to be capable of these kinds of graphics, most titles will not be that beautiful. Content is extremely important. If the player can beat it in a week with an average amount of play, and not feel satisfied, they can return it to the store, trade it in, or sell it to a friend, all three which cause the publisher/developer to loose money.

I'd expect that major franchises will reach those heights quite easily. Unreal is a major franchise, and Elder Scrolls is also quite large, giving them the time to develop their games to the fullest.

I doubt EA will reach that kind of quality for in-game play. The quality of the graphics will be quite the step up, but the above screenshots are pre-rendered images. If a company wants to impress us, release a video rendered in real time. Thats the only way to make a believer out of me.

I've said it before, but expect there to be a big FPS launched with the XBox 2, showcasing what it's capable of. Oh, and my bet goes on Rare to develop it. You heard me. No Halo 3 on launch. Just not logically possible.

I agree with you al, when i first saw nfl2k on the dc. I thought i was watchin an actual video game, unbelievable. The graphics for the next gen. isnt a problem, now with ea , it maybe, i wouldnt be suprised if it wasnt the intro CG, and thats all. Now i believe that sega and other developers will push the limits for thier games, but ea, no, same engine and just better graphics.

if u buy the right stuff the first time for a pc it is possible to last a good 2 years. The key is to do a ton of research to find what video cards are best and what processor is best. Also build your own computer, saves a ton of money. I spent less than $1000 for my PC and it runs all the latest games fine and its a little over a year old and doesnt need to be upgraded yet...and prolly not for another year or so.

There is no doubt in my mind if EA puts out something near that quality of graphics and launches with the next XBox, the PS3 will be second place in the States.
