Hey guys, I'm trying to determine whether or not I am able to play Halo via gamespy, but over the past few months I have had problems with my internet connection. I do have a cable modem, so I ran a quick test and this is what I got:

speed 1223 down/121 up kbps

Maybe I'm wrong but I think that the upstream should be much closer to the downstream speed.

If this wont have any effect on playing via gamespy then please let me know so I can stop worrying.

Hi,

Your upload speed has been limited. You may have to pay more to get increase upload speeds.

This practice is common in the UK at least. One of my friends has a connection where Download is 512 and upload is 128 (if not lower).

That actually shouldn't affect your games. My cable connection was 1.4 megs down and 120 kb up and I never had any problems with laggin in even the most picky games such as Counter-Strike where my ping averaged 70ms. You shouldn't have any problems at all with playing on gamespy.

like everyone who has cable has really low upload speeds, my max speed that ive gotten is like 50k/s for uploading

their is only one cable company in my area and they definatly got it capped, 130k both ways, although sometimes the downlaod gets up to 150-170 :)...:(

Sniper...I strongly doubt you will have any issues. Let's say you try it and it doesn't work...just keep the receipt so you can return the HUB (or Switch). But, I doubt you will have any problems. Anyone that I know that is using cable that plays on Gamespy never has had any issues.

I will have to point out to you, though, that when you are playing, as GokuX has pointed out, it's important to play against people that have a low ping. On Gamespy, the games on the top of the list have lower pings...the farther you go down, they have higher pings. The lower pings the better, therefore, less or no lag.

So, anything under about 150ms is considered pretty good. If you play against people that are under 100ms, that's great! Under 70ms is outstanding! I didn't know what all this meant until I got on Gamespy, admittingly. But, now I do and it makes perfect sense. Just know that the lower the ping, the better and it says on the right hand side of each game on your computer screen what the ping rate is.

From my understanding, as long as you aren't hosting the game you should be okay.

Actually, that isn't the case. Whether a person is a host or is a visitor, the game will lag if there are high pings present. High pings are simply a royal waste of time. I prefer hosting games, therefore, allowing myself to choose who can join simply by looking at their ping rates.

All cable is capped at 128k, unless you find some ISP who will charge you $10 extra a month for a 256k upload. I believe charter offers this service.

There isnt anything u can do for upload speed. Upload is only good for running servers. FTP,Web,Game servers, Etc.....

i have charter cable, and i only pay 40 bucks a month (including modem rental) for 768k download and like 512k upload. the upload is supposed to be 128k, but mine is faster, i dont know why though, i dont pay any extra money.

You may have a lot of taps on your cable also but most cable companies offer upgrades to 256k or whatever (its about double the price of 128k here.)

How do you test your connection speed?

For 3 weeks straight my cable download speed was rated at 4.9 megs and my upload speed was rated at 1.5 megs. I could download anything in mere minutes since I was pulling 650K+ per second from most download sites. I dunno what was up, perhaps they were allotting extra megs for customers they were going to add in the future but it ruled.

The problem is most likely because more people have jumped onto your line, each line supports 256 users (nodes) or an ip address range from X.X.X.1 X.X.X.256, once these are filled they use a technique called subnetting.

When i switched my scope of ip address and was moved to a new segment of my network with only about 14 people, i would pull 900k no problem for months. Now i average about 550k.

Well Ill start with "All cable is capped at 128k"...not this should be enough but ill also say..but about $10 more for 256k...maybe thats how it works where you live, but ive never heard of that before, anywhere. Usually cable is 256k or 300k up...

Now for "Upload is only good for running servers. FTP,Web,Game servers, Etc....." I know you said "game" but without a good upload you wouldnt be able to play any online computer game...and that hurts enough...but also it effects everyday web browsing. if you cant send out info fast enough, making info come back isint going to improve your overall connection much...

Ok. Yep, but its too expensive for people unless they do have business purposes...

Snoopy7548
02-08-2002, 05:07 PM
its not expensive here in new milford, ct. charter communications is my cable provider and i get 768k down and like 512 up for 40 bucks a month, and that includes the modem rental. :D

Frostberg
02-08-2002, 09:56 PM
yeah but the reason yours is cheap is because your download isint as great as other peoples, so you have like a trade off...
