My friend has a Xbox, from when they were first released, and he is experiencing major problems. When he is trying to play games, the "Dirty Disc" error comes up, or it will take us up to 8 minutes to load the games. Whereas my Xbox was bought Christmas of 2003, and it plays everything perfectly, no errors at all.

My question is, in the year difference of the Xboxs was there a change in the drives or anything?

Please help!

Original Xbox - Thompson DVD Drive
Newer Xbox - Samsung or [I forget other brand] DVD Drive

Thompson Drives Suck. Everyones die out eventually it seems...
He'll likely have to get a new one.

All the new ones (yours) I have yet to see problems with.

I have the same problem. Ive had my Xbox since 2002 and have had the occasional DDE message but today it just crapped out! It wont play a single game. Only audio CD's. tomorrow Im taking it in and paying 90 bucks to get a new one. Why cant MS just make a console that works. Why make us spend more money on their faulty product? well Ill tell you how my new drive works hopefully tomorrow.

Have Fun with that!

P.S Ive heard compressed air might be able to get rid of the problem. Didnt work for me :bang:

3 types of drives, thomspan, samsung, and some other one.. thompson is the light circle, x is the darker one, and samsung has 2 holes like a tray.

I have a thomson drive in my Xbox and I get a "can't read disk" error every once and a while, but not that often. I think some people just get unlucky.

I went to futureshop bought a dvd lense cleaner, used it, went back and told them that it screwed up my xbox and i got a new one made Nov 8 04 for free. I gave them my old broken one. *FYI Future shop is the Canadian Best Buy*

If it worked for a disc, why not the Xbox? Yup, i saw boil the xbox. It'll clean off all of the deterioration on the components...

i must agree..everytime i have problems with my Xbox, i throw it in a pot of boiling water and it comes out good as new

its best to have it plugged in when you put it in the water too...fixes a LOT quicker :)

xbox systems are the easiest to overheat, so its best not to put it down onto a rug or to leave it on unattended for extremely extensive periods of time. It will do damage to the unit
