View Full Version : Why did Bungie make it so Power Weapons don't respawn?

I personally think this is one of the largest problems for gameplay in Halo 2. :cuss: In the originall Halo, weapons spawn at a constant rate and in a relatively short time. Now in Halo 2, if someone has a power weapon, its NEVER respawn until its dropped. Now Bungie's original intent was to stop weapon camping and "stop watching", but it totally backfired. Now instead of camping in a certain spot, one team simply grabs all the power weapons while the other simply gets destroyed because they don't even get a chance to get powerful weapons. This happens WAY too much and ruins too many games. My suggestion is that have ALL the weapons spawn at a constant rate like in H1 again, but to prevent weapon camping, make it so that these power weapons do not appear until the surrounding area is clear. What do you think?

How about just a random respawn? Because if you are on a small map or like the sniper in coag the weapon is in your base you will always be close to these areas.

I've noticed it sometimes but helps you perfect better strategies with weaker guns. It actually makes you better by allowing you to use combos and guns you wouldn't normally use. It also teaches you how to take out Snipers and people with the rocket with other means.
then every game would inevitably turn into a power weapon match. it would turn into a sword game, sniper, rocket, shotty, etc. It wouldn't be good.

So Vman, are you saying thats how Halo 1 was? I know ALOT of people who would disagree with you on that.

well, of course not... but in halo2, we dont have the almighty pistol. :)

That's true. Thats also why I think we should start with a viable weapon like the battle rifle. It may not be the pistol, but its still pretty damn good if you know how to use it. In fact, I use it alot. The MLG tourneys also use it.
Also, I played Halo 1 today and it seemed ALL the weapons where almost at a constant spawn in comparison to Halo 2. What I mean by that is that whenever I went by a spawn point, the weapons ALWAYS seemed to be there, even though I just got one a few seconds ago.
I think a "constant spawn" might be an interesting idea. Have it so that the weapon is ALWAYS there to pick up. Even though this could result in teams all having the same weapon, once they had their fill they wouldn't need to camp anymore. The other team would also be always be able to get that weapon, as long as there is more than one spawn on the map. Even if a team did decide to camp a certain weapon, that team would have to split up their to camp all the spawns, which would make them vulnerable to attack be an entire organized team.
Also, the other weapons would be open, probably including an adequate counter to the earlier weapon. Therefore, the other team will ALL be able to have a counter to the earlier one, so the first team would be less likely to get all the same weapon next time around. I think it would eventually even out, or the first team will get owned by a well organized team. I think it should at least be a custom option, the opposite to no respawning. Just a thought. :)

The only problem is that with super weapon respawning is that now theres a chance for the other team to get it again. So you'll have that extra sniper, extra rocketman and extra swordsman running around on the other team.
It's not so bad that they don't respawn. Yes it sucks when one team gets it all, but strategy supercedes firepower anytime.

Interesting, maybe. I'd like to see how that would turn out.
IMO, ppl are cheap now as it is. I think it would inevetibly lead to weapon whoring. Somehow, Halo2 turned into a unskillful game and this would just add to the madness. Sure, the BR might give you a better edge than the smg, but you are still screwed.

With Halo 1, each weapon was on a timer. For example, it take 3 minutes for the Sniper to respawn on Blood Gulch (if my memory holds correct). Now, it's important to know that as soon as the game starts, the counter starts. So, if no one were to pick up the Sniper Rifle, for example, until 2:59, it would respawn 1 second later again...not 3 minutes after it is picked up.

The thing is, in Halo 1 you never got to play with as many people. Now with larger matches your strategy will get ****ed by the guy who had the respawned rocket launcher you forgot to grab. Without respawing power weapons, you don't have to worry about it as much.

I will agree with you on that, but two things made this plan backfire:
1) SMG start. Makes power weapons ridiculously powerful and unfair.
2) Weapons don't reswpan until dropped. I don't really understand why they added this, it just encourages camping and hiding, and prevents a possible comeback if not controlled

Yeah, and those two things are almost as bad as the problem they prevent. :(

Man, 3 1/2 months feels like an eternity now...I can't believe I said 3 minutes...it's 2. Thanks! I know several people that used PDAs or PCs that actually let them know when the weapons respawn...several. I never used them unless I was over at their house playing.

Now that I think about it more (I haven't played Halo with 16 people for such a long time, but I have done it quite a bit back in the day) it wouldn't be so bad if power weapons respawned continuously. If you spawn with an SMG it at least gives you hope at defending yourself. I just wish there was no dual wielding, that ruins the game so much just like having the health system taken away. There's far too much random stuff in Halo 2 (sword, shotgun, battle rifle, grenades getting shot...). Even with all the problems I can't help but love it. Maybe Halo 3 will bring back the classic skill-based combat to a stunning level...

I have to agree with that. Even with the small matches on XBC, everyone didn't run around with a rocket.

You must of been a complete n00b at halo 1. When someone picks up a weapon guess what they do? they use it therefor 16 people having the rocket launcher at the same time is pretty hard to do.
