I did this over the weekend, I have XBL, and the updates, and my friends didn't. The game went perfectly fine.
Can't Play the New Maps
But you can play Foundation, because it is on the Halo 2 disc.

It makes it so the game plays like 1.0 instead of 1.1 which is better.

thx for the help. ok, now how can i get his xbox to have v1.1 i think 1.1 is alot more fun than the 1.0 but i dont want this to get into a debate over which is better......how can i get his xbox to have 1.1? put my xbox live info on a memory card and login to xboxlive on his box and do it that way?
from what I've heard, which ever box is the host is what version will be played, so have your xbox with the update host the game. If you want him to get the update, just put your xbl account to a memory card and log in, thats all you have to do.

Based on a little reading and what not.. in a system link where one Halo 2 game is version 1.1 and the other is 1.0, then the Xbox with 1.1 despite being the host will switch down to 1.0. So all the stuff that was changed with 1.1 won't happen. That also means that the Xbox with all the new maps won't use them with the 1.0 Halo 2 with the exception of Foundation.
To get the other Xbox to 1.1 without Xbox live, then you need to get the map pack disk that's out in the stores. It automatically makes the patch to your hard drive so that when the nonlive Xbox loads Halo 2, it will have version 1.1.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Of course, you don't have to buy the Mulitplayer Map Pack after the 30th, everything will be free, and in this guys scenario, he should just put his live account on his friends xbox and everything will work fine.
