What is the power consumption of the new 360? I haven't seen it listed on any specs.

Thanks,

Roger

To be honest, no one has. Only Microsoft employee's would know.

wait, are you actually wondering how much power the system is going to use?
Like the kWh ???

If this is what you are asking.... this will be the first time I've EVER seen this question. I'm just shocked lol

Anyways to try and answer you question.... No one knows, except for the MS employee's like Double_Diablo said. I don't believe I have ever heard how much power any of the systems used.

My guess would be around 200W. Could be 50W to either side of that. Depends on if you have the HD spinning and the DVD accessing.

Why do you care why someone else cares? I lived on a 27 foot sailboat for 5 years, and wattage mattered a lot to me. Everything ran from an inverter that was powered by four 12 volt batteries which were trickle-charged by a wind turbine. I had to shut my computer down before I played any console games.

So before you run around pointing fingers and acting like an 8-year-old bully, keep in mind that the narrow little slice of the universe that is your single existence, bears very little resemblance with that of others.

A more reasonable reply would be "Interesting question, why does it concern you?"

Thanks a ton for saying that you aren't trying to be mean. Next time, try harder. Because what you are saying and how you are saying it do not jibe. Pardon the extended metaphor.

The simple answer is: pre-menstrual syndrome. :hump:

Nothing like an intellectual beat down. I haven't seen that done around here in a long time.

Semi-on-topic:
Anyone know if the power supply is going to be built into the unit, or is it going to be an enormous brick, a'la Gamecube?

I understand why you might be puzzled at the question but that doesn't mean it doesn't have validity in regards to someone else.

Yes. In the left area of the system, there will be one of these

So to answer your question..... it's built in.

I'm surprised it's built in. I would think this generation of consoles would have severe heat issues, and try to move the transformers outside. Not to mention the seemingly obvious attempt to make the XBox2 more sleek, so moving it out to save space.

On the one hand, I'm glad. When I first saw the Gamecube I was stunned at how small it was to be so powerful. I brought it home only to discover that I had really purchased TWO cubes! Contrariwise, it's nice when a powersupply goes kaput and you can just go buy another one.

I design and import video game plates and inverter systems for the mobile environment. We now have a system with a 150 Watt inverter that suits the 100 Watt Xbox well.
Just trying to stay ahead of the competition, if a change needs to be made I have to start importing the larger inverters now to have them by Nov.

I was hoping that an MS employee would peruse this post.

Nice post Swivel.

Thanks Rogerdon. I feel even better knowing I was sticking up for a fellow engineer.

God forbid the Internet be used as a medium for asking questions and acquiring knowledge. I've never studied the history of the Internet before, but I assume it was created by a cooperative effort between two groups - SICKOS and PEEPS. Or Socially Inept Crybaby Kidos Ostracized and Stinky, the national foundation of trolls, fanboys, and pimply-faced virgin finger-pointers. And People Espousing Electronic Pedophilia Society, a group 100 million strong that collect porn by the terabytes and masturbate three times a day.

That would be my guess.

Yet, somehow there are the few, the minority, such as yourself that use the medium for communicating ideas, transacting business, and furthering the persuits of science and general knowledge. If there were more of you, and less SICKOS and PEEPS, I would instead guess that the Internet was invented by scientists, researchers, and university faculty.

Lucky you. I was picking up a Canadian 'eh' habit there. Wasn't sure if it was a conversational pause, or a term of disgust and discontent.

Semi-back-on-topic, did you guys know the XBox2 has a water-cooling system? I just found this out and was surprised. It is becoming common with high-end PC's, but still seems slightly risky for a console to have fluid pumping around in it.

Explains my earlier questions of size and heat and power supplies.

1. I have never heard a Canadian say "eh". I think it's just a weird belief.
2. That water is for the hamster, not the cooling system

That should be illegal. I'm not sure if you know the funny limit in these parts, but that very easily exceeded it. Keep it cool, people live around here.

Perhaps you really are Canadian. Only other Canadians can't hear each other saying it. I do a lot of work up in the North Channel in Canada, and it is every other word. Sometimes I just bust out laughing in the middle of a conversation about the weather, and they just look at me, with that sad look on their faces, the one that kinda sighs: "American". But, like, it isn't any different, than, um, our speech pauses, I guess.

Doesn't look good for you if this is the power requirements. I may have under-guessed.

Hmm...in my opinion, around 300-400 watts cause of the three symetrical core CPU of 3.2 GHz.

Power consuption will be important for playing games on the raod, my kids love to play games on road-trips and you need to know if a ac-dc converter will do the job.

As far as power consumption its anybodies guess because no matter the ghz of the chips, chip design is a much more important factor as is, intelligent usage of the chips. i.e. laptop chips that suck up low wattage and step down their speed based on usage.

IBM makes chips that are so low wattage wise that they don't require active cooling and run at over 1 ghz. We do know that these Power PC based chips are smaller toned down versions (less transistors, etc..) and will likely take a lot less wattage at those 3.2 ghz speeds than a Power PC chip running at that speed.

In addition, ATI has come up with a very amazing laptop video card in its x800 series that sucks up much less power (I think it was about a 3rd of the power) than its desktop equivlent at very little performance loss. So we could have a very power efficient video card or a real hog depending on how ATi design it.

I'd like to think the earlier guess of about 250-150 watts is pretty close, possibly more like 250-350 watts, but who knows.

I do know my ac-dc converters only do 200 watts so there probably won't be any 360 on roadtrips.

ps Flame Sword8, I'm pretty sure you need to plug it into the ceiling to get it to work because of Ghz, Mhz, Amps, Watts, Ohms and other stuff that you wouldn't understand.

I live in a hotel where residents share circuits. The power consumption is limited; so everyone cannot be using a 1500-watt electric heater simultaneously. I have an Xbox 360 (I've been playing Gears of War), and I wanted to know its power consumption.

I want to thank everyone who made open-minded and polite replies to this thread. :)
