The likeliness of a frenzied (and faked) Xbox 360 shortage in the US has increased greatly now, with a pre-order Xbox 360 deal going past $10,000 on eBay. The chances of a scared hardcore gamer legitimately bidding above ten thousand dollars just to get an Xbox 360 at launch are not worth thinking about. So we’re leaning towards this auction being either: a bunch of fake bids mocking a high starting price, or another viral marketing scheme intended to scare punters into pre-ordering an Xbox 360.

All the news media's been saying is that there will be a shortage. I'm surprised that there haven't been people like me pushing their every10minutes.com-acquired 360s onto eBay. I mean, its a guaranteed shipdate of the weekend before the retail release. Hardcore gamers and stupid parents would be all over such a promise.

IF......and that's a big IF...there turns out to be any shortage whatsoever, it is all pre-planned by the big M to increase the hype. Look at it logically. They could choose to release it whenever they wanted and they want/need to sell as many as possible so why release it if you know you're not going to have an adequate supply on that date.

Over $10000?! God. Why not buy a car or something? Xbox 360 isn't the most important thing in the world.

I find the idea of "predicting" a shortage quite amusing. You don't predict shortages...shortages are things that happen when demand is surprisingly higher than expected. Unless maybe a single component requires a material that has had a surprising jump in demand lately, such as components for LCD TVs...But I've heard of no such thing for the 360.

More likely M$ is either pushing for a very stringent release date, and can't manufacture enough to make demand over the first few days, or its a marketing tactic...or more likely both. I have little doubt that as the Christmas season rolls along, there will be plenty of supply for those nervous parents who must buy the latest and greatest for junior.

The image of the "must have toy" like PS2 had worked well for Sony, why wouldn't MS want to simulate it for the benefit, then miraculously increase production in time for Christmas.

*sigh*... If only I had $10000 to waste on a 360..

As long as MS isn't stopping making 360s there is absolutly no reason to spend 10 grand on one of these. I mean if you that desperate make sure you come up with the craziest idea ever to win that Hex thingy.

Pretty much my sentiments. If I had 100 billion dollars it would still not make it worthwhile to spend that kind of money on an X-Box 360. It is not like you won't be able to eventually get one.

It would be one thing if they were only making 100 of them, but they will make 10s of millions of them.

This whole thing was probably set up by MS.... That would be a good move if you ask me.

I think pre-orders moot this argument. Puts and sells predict the opening of the markets before supply and demand take effect. Basically, by pre-selling, you are giving the market a voice in demand before the effect of supply kicks in.

I wish I had the money to scalp these bad boys. There are always people out there buying it a week after launch, but cant find them in stores. A friend did this with the PS2 and had to spend $1300. Scalping Leaf Tickets and Scalping gaming systems. My future job.
