I'm excluding western RPGs for simplicity's sake.

Panzer Dragoon Azel for the Saturn is still my favorite and is by far the most unique RPG ever made. Everything about it was superlative, most of all its story which had more impact in its twenty hours of gameplay than most other games get from playing times twice and triple that length. It's just too bad that so few people got the chance to play it.

Some of my other favorites:
Final Fantasy 7 and 9 and Tactics
Grandia 1 and 2
Skies Of Arcadia
Dragon Quest 8
Phantasy Star 1, 2, 4

That or Baldur's Gate II. I really can't decide which.

For Xbox it would have to be either Baldul's Gate II, that was so much fun beating that game with a friend. Or else it would be KoTOR because the storyline is unbeatable. And for PC it would have to be WoW, if that counts.

Gothic 2.

I was a huge Morrowind fan, but this game is 10 times better than Morrowind.

Wost RPG I've ever played was Fable. I have a hard time even considering it an RPG.

Tell any reason why it WOULDN'T be an RPG?

Tell any reason why it WOULDN'T be an RPG?

Because you don't get experience for killing baddies. Instead you run around collecting "Pick-Ups" like it is a platformer. The game felt more like Jak and Daxter to me, than it did an RPG.

Also, instead of an open environment, where the player makes choices, you complete a quest, and a voice tells you that there is another quest available at the table map. You go back, get your next "Level", and complete it. Again, more like a platformer than an RPG.

The combat is twitch-oriented. You mash buttons to attack, very much like a platformer. This part felt very much like a Ratchet game, where you level up your weapons, and they do more damage. RPG's typically use simulated dice rolls.

There is no Role Playing involved. Your character has no personality. Changing haircuts and pasting tatoos felt like dressing dolly, not like a character being developed over time.

You don't naturally level up. You collect the Platformer Pick-Ups, and "Trade" them in for upgrades. Again, this felt like many console platformers, it did not feel like an RPG.

There are a few iconic RPG-Style genres out there. You have the Diablo click-fests that are all about the level chain and the loot. You have MMORPG's, which are mainly about the level chain, and community. You have the 3rd-person isometric view PC RPG's, like Fallout, Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights, et al. You have the FPS blended RPG's like Daggerfall, Morrowind, Gothic. For the consoles you have the Japanese-style RPG like FF, Dragonquest, Shadowhearts, Wild Arms, etc.

Nowhere in the annals of RPG gaming do you find anything like Fable. It had zero features that were promised. The levels were linear. The load times were horrible (sometimes for a hallway of a forest that was as long as a room!), the combat and the enemies were boring and repetitive.

I have found two camps regarding Fable. For many, it was the only "RPG" they have ever played, and it was so much like a platformer, that they loved it. They have nothing to compare it to.

Then there are the die-hard RPG players (or anyone who has played at least one true RPG). They usually hate Fable.

I have nothing against people liking Fable. For me, it was the worst game I ever played in my entire life, much less the worst "RPG". I think many people liked it because they didn't realize they were playing another Platformer.

That doesn't mean it's 'not' an RPG, it just means it's different from a typical RPG. If it was like other RPG's a lot more people would have been pissed. I personally didn't like Fable either but at least it was different.

A donkey is different from a horse, which is why it isn't a horse.

I understand your point, and I don't know which of us is right, if either. Just a matter of opinion. If it was only one thing, I would say it is a different kind of horse, but I listed quite a few off of the top of my head that makes me think it is a different species.

Playing it felt much more like a platformer to me.

I'm an RPG junkie. I play them all. It is my favorite genre. And I am a die-hard gamer, I play every system, and I give all game types a chance. That's why I listed the many types of RPG's that I play, and I enjoy them all equally.

Fable was none of these things for me. I truly do not feel that it should be considered an RPG. And I have had numerous others agree with me in this very forum in another thread.

I respect your opinion, though.

I have to agree that Fable really didn't feel like much of an RPG. It had a bit of RPG-like storytelling, some platformer style fighting, and some Sims like housekeeping.

I don't agree on Gothic II though. It had potential, but I never could get over the complete non-fluidity of the controls. It almost felt like some sort of weird tiled FPS control or something..it was just...odd. I wasn't big on the levelling up system either, it felt rather...uninspiring. I don't mind a non-twitch rpg at all. Autoslash works fine for me, but Gothic felt like it was trying to be something it really wasn't. I only got as far as joining the militia, then after a good deal of time wandering the wilderness killing things aimlessly I sorta grew bored with it.

Agree 100%.

The controls, the game balance, everything was changed with the expansion pack. The expansion actually changes everything about the game, including the controls.

I walked away from Gothic 2 5 minutes in the first time. I can't stay away from it now. They fixed every complaint from the original release.

Shaded, pm me an address, and I'll Amazon Gift you a copy of the Gold edition. You will love it if you give it a chance. Completely tide you over until Oblivion comes out.

What did they change? Can you properly dodge and move around now, and does the range of a weapon and collision for a hit actually appear accurately on the screen? Those were probably the 2 main things that drove me away from the title originally. The magic system also seemed pretty innefective, since you don't appear to regenerate mana short of heading into town to rest...though admitedly, I never did become a mage.

Mana is recharged as well through potions and various plants. The plants are everywhere, so diligence gets you far.

I never really had to dodge, and I am towards the end of the game now (54 hours so far!). You mouse-look and run and strafe with wasd. Draw your weapon with the spacebar, attack with the left mouse and block with the right mouse. You can zoom with the scrollwheel. The buttons 1-9 can be assigned to any spell or weapon you want. I've messed around with the magic out of curiosity, but I rarely play spell-casters in single-player games. They are more useful in parties, in my opinion.

Honestly, the game just felt right when I booted up the expansion pack. And the longer I played, the more in love I became with it. I was resistant for months with getting the game. I have a friend of 17 years, who used to play Zork with me, fighting over the keyboard. We have run the gaming gauntlet together. Well, he had been bugging me for months to get this game, offering to buy and ship me a copy if that's what it took. I finally got it, because $17 was enough to shut him up and prove him wrong.

It was I, who was wrong.

Fallout 2 used to be my favorite RPG of all time. No more.

Now.. before I say this next bit, you have to understand that there may be no bigger TES fan around. I was a wreck when Daggerfall came out. Just typing Daggerfall, I can taste the game in the back of my throat. I lived that game for a year, bugs and all. Same goes for Morrowind. I still boot it up now and then, play with all the expansions, install mods all day long, go to my virtual library of in-game books collected and read them for pleasure. So.... just so you understand my thrill for all things TES.... hear this: Righ now I am looking more forward to Gothic 3 than I am for Oblivion. Much more.

You read those books? Yikes ;) . I did my share of collecting them, but I couldn't bring myself to read very many.

Fallout 2 I'd almost completely forgotten about! Also a classic, though I'm gonna stand by Baldur's Gate I/II/TOB.

I'll see what I can do about getting a copy of g2gold though, I'm willing to give it a second chance.

One of the things I think always made me fall in love with the BG series though was being able to control, role-play, and level up 5 or 6 different characters, or, share them with a friend online. That and the spell selection, too many games spend too much time worrying about fireball, lightning bolt, ice shard, etc spells.

You will be sooooo glad you did. I'm playing Gothic as a 100% goodie-goodie, which is rare for me, and it has been so rewarding. The militia are rotten in this game, so it is like being the only good cop on a dirty police force, trying to take down the theives guild single-handed. There are great quests that have you chasing crooks through town, then, if you catch them, having to be strong and refuse their bribes.

The add-on is tons of content. It doesn't just add on an new level, it actually changes the entire game. More weapons, NPC's, quests, items, and baddies spread all through the game.

If you rate Baldur's Gate high, have you played Arcanum? I found it to be similar, and loved them all as well. Sacred and Divine Divinity were great, but a little different.

Sacred I played, that was great, though I found it hailed more to Diablo than BG. Divine Divinity I think i played the demo for, didn't like it.

Arcanum I've always intended to play, maybe will at some point, but i guess it slipped past me.

i'm adding Chrono Trigger for SNES on my list. been playin that game lately, and damn it rules. usually i dislike traditional rpg combat system with teh random battles and all, but Chrono Trigger handles it really well.
