appearantly, the next installment in the Halo series is a prequel and not a sequel. many gaming sites are going crazy with this new rumor. Halo 3 wont be called "Halo 3" but Forerunner. A member over at Xbox.com had this to say:
Halo 3 is currently being called "Forerunner" and has 4 player co-op. They don't know when it's going to be released yet and Bungie is denying that Halo 3 exists because they haven't named is Halo 3 yet.
P.S. I got this from a very reliable source.
However, later in the thread he obviously has some doubters. He answers:
...because i got my info from gameimformer, who got their information from Bungie themselves...
XBA (our front page) has this posted in there news:
Though this could very well be a stinking pile of garbage, a post by someone named DM Duo Maxwell on Xbox.com claims he transcribed an upcoming Game Informer article on Halo 3. According to the post, Halo 3 won’t be called Halo 3. Instead, the title will be called Forerunner. Again, this could be total trash. When contacted for a comment, Microsoft unloaded the standard, "Microsoft doesn’t comment on rumors or speculation." Make no mistake, this information is entirely speculative, as no credible sources have yet come forward to back the post up.
The only thing that makes the post notable is the level of detail. In addition to the different name, Forerunner will feature large-scale environments, open-ended mission designs and support cooperative play for up to four players. Master Chief is still in the game as well, according to the post, and functions as the main playable character.
Since all of this could be false, that’s about as much as we’re going to say. We’ll have any concrete information as soon as it’s available for this highly anticipated game, be it Halo 3 or Forerunner or whatever else happens to get churned out of the rumor mill.
Also there is this article that I found Halo 3 = Forerunner? Or elaborate April Fool's joke? (http://xbox360.qj.net/Halo-3-Forerunner-Or-elaborate-April-Fool-s-joke-/pg/49/aid/11034)
I found another article giving a few more details.

Halo 3 = Forerunner
An Xbox.com forum poster, DM Duo Maxwell, is claiming to have reproduced, in its entirety, an exclusive Game Informer article from the upcoming April issue that reveals details about Bungie's next project. According to the post, Bungie's next project will be a Halo game for the Xbox 360, currently codenamed, Forerunner.
The source reports that the game will feature "huge persistent worlds" using a modified Halo 2 engine. The main campaign will still feature Master Chief and will showcase 4-player co-op. The missions, however, will not be linear, nor will objectives been required. For example, if players are tasked with capturing a weapons depot, but decide to forego the assignment, then they will loose the opportunity to seize the additional weaponry and, in effect, will hand these weapons over to the enemy.
If you are charged to capture a weapons depot, for instance, you might not choose to do it, or may fail trying. Although our source says the game still has a definite mission structure, your failure at this particular task will mean that wh atever extra firepower may have been yours for the taking had you caputred the depot will instead strengthen your enemies from then on. This cause/effect concept applies to the game's destructible environments as well. Of course, the philosophy is nothing new in video games, but it clearly embraces Bungie's love of multiplayer and the lessons learned from the series' success online. We imagine that these tidbits are surely only the tip of an iceberg that hopefully includes plans to merge the offline and online worlds together to great effect.
Highlights
Halo 3 isn't currently called Halo 3. In fact, it doesn't even have halo in the name - it is called Forerunner
It will include HUGE environments.
It will be somewhat open - i.e. A mission where you have to go invade/destroy an armory will determine how much weaponry you have for the next mission and how much the opposing forces will have.
Will have a definite mission structure - but still be somewhat open.
4 Player Co-Op
A gameinformer source (not named) HAS SEEN THE GAME IN ACTION. He also explains that the reason Bungie says there is no Halo 3 is because it will most likely be called "Forerunner"
Personally, I honestly don't care what the damn game is called because it will not come close to Halo:CE. But prequel or sequel, it will undoubtedly be a great online FPS.
