Yea it's sad... i've had the game for about 3 weeks and i've been using the left bumper button which just gently throws the puck directly behind you. This is very dangerous if your taking a faceoff at center because my idiot defensement don't react to it and let the puck sit there for the opposing team!! If anyone has a better a better control list then they provide with the game plz post. BTW the pass button does nothing

Depending on the handedness of your faceoff taker.

You always want to try and win it to your backhand side.. so if you have a right handed guy taking the faceoff.. rotate the right stick right and back.. left and back for other handed. It has to be smooth.. and end as the puck hits the ice

It's not hard to do, but be aware that even with perfect technique you can lose a large percentage of faceoffs based purely on the players aptitude at it (i.e. the rating in that area).

The basic faceoff is pulling the right stick diagonally back to either direction depending on which D-man you want to take it. You can also feed it to either side, but these players are under immediate pressure from the opposing wingers. (It doesn't matter if the player is right or left handed, they can feed the puck to any side.)

There are roughly 3 types of drop (puck), the ref will either:
Long pause-Drop
Fake one-pause-Drop
Fake one-two-three-Drop

Getting the timing and recognising the drop is the key to winning the guid % of your faceoffs.

Now again, if you play it on Rookie or even Pro then you should be winning easily 75% of them. When you go upto Allstar or Superstar then you'll be lucky to win at best 60% and that's if you're doing real puckin' well.

Also... if you're playing in Dynasty mode... it's worth adjusting your forwards training regime to increase their hands... improving their stick-handling, puck retention and faceoffs. Usually more beneficial for forwards than say... checking.

When you're in the offensive zone, it's always worth being ready for a one-timer from the point. When you pull the right stick back towards either D-man, tap forward on it to initiate a hard shot from the point. Not a regular goal but it can lead to rebounds for shovelling in the garbage.
