I hardly even played xbox until I got a 360 last summer. Now I'm addicted... first Halo 2 and now Gears of War... anyway I desperately want xbox live. Its out of the quest at home since I live in the boondocks and will never get cable or dsl and haven't had any luck connecting at college since they block it. I have heard of so many people getting around this by connecting through their laptops. ANY help would be amazing...

You'll have to enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on your laptop. Google it, because that's all I know.

Ideally, your 360 will connect to your laptop's ethernet port and your laptop will connect to your college network wirelessly.

Well I cant actually test it now cuz I have about 2 weeks until Im back. Do I have to change anything on the 360 to enable sharing?

No, the 360 doesn't care where it's getting it's internet from. Much like any other device that needs an internet connection.

Now Im back at college and I suppose that I am going to need my own wireless router?...
I connected to my friends wireless and then ran an ethernet cable from my xbox to my laptop. I tried to connect to xbox live but my 360 couldn't get an IP address... ( it's set to automatic)

Does anyone have any furthur advice??

You need a Modem? Get a wire? Plug it in? Dude I had lots off problems with my xbox live cos my router broke I even cryed because I didnt have it for 6 months.. Turns out all I needed to do was plug into my modem.. If you help blud just ask.

what so you mean by a modem? Do you mean just plugging it into the wall cuz when I plug my 360 into the wall just like I would my laptop troubleshooting only gets as far as MTU and fails there (whatever that means...something about packets)
