Story:
I bought Rainbow Six Vegas on December 20th. By the 1st week of January, "disc unredable errors" were popping up once and a while. Less than 2 weeks later, they became frequent in loading screens / games. By mid-month, the disc passed away (ie: wouldn't even start up before D.E). The game did have some scuffs on it by the end, but it was never dropped.. and was left one overnight not in a case maybe twice. I have never had a came crap out on me like this.. ever.. so I wasn't that angry, and bit the bullet and just bought it again.
With the 2nd copy of the game, I was EXTRA careful, just incase maybe I did **** things up and a cat walked over it one of the nights it was left out. The 2nd disc was never outside of the case or system, not even when a movie was being watched (i frequently just lay the disc on my stand, and put it back in after movie). Not this time.. it was always enclosed in something. I am now a month on to this disc, and it is near-death (ie: I can get past the credits, and the first menu screen before getting D.E). The disc now has a couple scuffs, just like the previous one did.. so my conclusion is, the xbox is scuffing the disc. This isn't a surprise, as all trays eventually scuff discs, but not enough to damage them so soon in their life.
I suppouse it is possible something has shifted in the xbox, and I am getting something damaging the disc as it spins... but here is the twist to this story.. I don't get D.E. errors on any other game.. not even Perfect Dark, which has gotten more play than any other game I have ever owned for either XBOX. It isn't played much nowadays, but if something was damaging discs, wouldn't it become unplayable too? Call of Duty 3 is the #2 played game, and it has no problems either.
So I have come up with 2 possible theorys:
1) The system is scuffing the discs, but only Rainbow Six is effected enough because it's a newer game, and im guessing, more demanding on the system.. leading to a D.E. error.
2) The system isn't damaging the discs (see: other games are fine), and I actually managed to somehow get back-to-back defective discs, bought from seperate stores.
I've called 4MYXBOX.. they said as a first troubleshoot to delete any saved files from RSV, as a corrupted file could cause DE errors. It didn't help.
NEW DEVELOPMENT:
As i was typing this, my friend called me back. Earlier tonight I gave him my game to play on his system (to determine system or game issue). The game gets D.E. on his system too (which is 4 months new).
So the system must be scuffing the disc.
So.. why do other games not have problems? Why Rainbow.. twice?
Well that is my story.. I needed to vent it somewhere. I could get my system replaced / repaired for free as far as I know (it's a launch system)... but this won't bring back my game. Will a warranty on the game cover damage done by the system? Christ I don't know what to do.. I'm so depressed right now.. two $70 games and a $500 system all confirmed to have issues in the last month.
