Games in Action has organized what has to be the first tournament for Halo 3.

The Shock & Awe tourney is set to begin on the day Halo 3 launches, in about nine months, and will be a 4-on-4, best of three, 256 team, single elimination tournament.

To enter the tournament you need to sign up for the site's forums (http://forums.gamesinaction.com/ibb/posts.aspx?postID=21683), but it is free and they are giving away $5,000 in prizes.

That is cool! We plan on having a LAN Halo 3 tourney the first weekend it is released. Man, the first day! that is gonna be sweet!

Sweet for hackers... The halo beta will be online right? why don't we have a tourney on that?

I dont think we know if its online or not, i think we are all assuming it will be because they want us to test it and multi probably needs more testing then single, and bungie doesn't like giving away stuff about their games story and plot.

Its going to be online multiplayer with the same match making system, and Bungie has also said that you can play with friends, no single player. I'll see if I can find the info on it and I'll post the link.

Edit: Will the party system be implemented in the beta?

Yes, you will be able to find your friends, join their party and enter matchmaking with them, in playlists which support parties.
