Well, logged on to Xbox Live for the first time last night to play some Gears of War...
The first game that I joined had this little white kid(who apparently thought that he was black/gangsta). I'm guessing that he wasn't even out of diapers yet. He also sounded like he'd had way too much sugar. Sooooo annoying.
The second game that I joined had a group of guys that apparently knew eachother. I clicked over to the COG's side and they instantly started smack talking me. Apparently they wanted me to go to the Locust side. When I didn't move over immediately, the smack talk and name calling got worse. One guy even tried to take a jab at the fact that I was from Canada. At any rate, it didn't bother me(I deal with that kinda %*$ at work every night).
Is this what Xbox Live is usually like? If so, is there any way to avoid these types of people? I'd much rather play with non-elitists and people closer to my age group. I suppose I could just take my headset off. Don't have to listen to them when my headset is lying on the floor.

It happens, sometimes you'll have a night of just rude people and kids, and others, you'll add like 10 people to your friends list.
Sadly, just use the mute feature and avoid player options is the best way to go.
I get jab's from being from Canada as well, which I don't really get, but whatever...

It's because Canadians smell!!2
Bleh, it's been a while since I've been on live - but the prepubescent tough ****s always gave me a laugh more than anything.
Generally though, I've found most people on live to be helpful and - no homo - a pleasure to play with.
Just wait until Halo 3 comes out. Then gears will be left to all the older people and more dedicated. And halo 3 will be filled with all the screaming banshees

Sadly there is no way even with live's little system, best thing to do is **** talk right back and laugh at their face xD... I like to minoritize all the squeaky children into the chipmunk category then the more ignorant older children into the jack ass category then the *******ish young adults into the **** you moron category then the older more laid back players who aren't ****ing elites and don't care into the **** yeah you're cool category
you'll get the hang of it ^^

mute them?
pretty much the only solution unfortunately. bickering is too much of a distraction most of the time and i'll end up losing if i start flapping my gums a lot.

I rarely if never use the mic for the same reason.
But, what's cool with XBox Live on the 360 is that you can set up a private discussion so you are only talking to people you want to talk to. That's mainly what I do if I play...or I only play with people on my friends list. I'm very picky about adding new people.

You still havent added me i think
They NEED to implement group chat like how Xbox v1 had 8 people per room.
