Well, I bought Army of Two. After I've played through more of it, I'll do an actual review... but for now, I wanted to share my impressions of the game... Here is what my original thoughts were: Well, I got it this weekend and I thought the idea was great. The execution, though, not so much. Granted, I'm comparing it to CoD4, but I'm also comparing it to GoW. I thought the cover system in Gears was incredible. At times, it feels like that's exactly what Ao2 is emulating. At other times, it feels like it is trying but it's just not got the pedigree required to hang in that league.
I agree with the comments about the game being an amalgam of 3 popular games. However, I think alot of games are going that route these days as it is commercially safer to follow the group than to branch out on it's own. I do like the idea and I think that a game that is all about the co-op is awesome, but I just don't think this is the game to set the standard.
It's a rental. And probably a one-timer at that.
Now that I've spent some more time with it and had a chance to play the multiplayer, I have to say that my original thoughts still ring pretty much true. I tried to make adjustments to the sighting and it just didn't help enough.
I really like the idea of the upgradeable weapons and I appreciate not having to go back through and re-earn the weapons I've already upgraded in single player (in Co-Op). That portion of the game has so much potential that is thoroughly untapped that it is just really sad.
I really wanted to love this game. But I can't find enough reasons to even like it. For a lot of people, this may be the pinnacle of co-op gaming; but for me, it's not even close. If you want a better co-op experience, go pick up Gears of War. Or hell, even Halo 3.
Now that I've spent time with the game, I'm not even sure I would recommend it as a rental. But that being said, don't take my word for it, just don't waste $60 on it. Head to Blockbuster and save yourself a headache and some money...
Again, just my 2 cents...
