External Media HDD for XBOX

Hi all new to the forum, thought id ask a question while im here.

I have my 360 hooked up on the network so i can stream videos from my PC's HDD, im now getting to the stage that im sick of turning my PC on everytime i want to watch a film, so i want to add an external networked hard drive or Network Attached Storage (NAS) as they call them.

Any ideas which HDD's support the streaming feature and how would i go about getting the 360 to detect the hard drive? Will it just simply be the case of any HDD that supports the use of UPnP?
This is where im stuck at as i cant find any guides on the net.

First off, Welcome.

I have a passport style WD 160g external HD I use for my music and video files. Love it, keeps you from having to load music on your 360 HD and keeps it from working it's ass off.
Go with a good name brand and your all good.

I take it yours is USB connected to the XBOX right?
I want to try and do a networked hard drive which is where i have the problem of finding any info on it :(

Yes mine is USB. I don't know about the network thing, sorry.

I believe any HD should work AS LONG AS it is the correct format.

Unfortunately the 360 for some reason only supports the outdated fat32 format.

If your Harddrive is formated as NTFS (as most large HD's will be) you will need to reformat.

I had some difficulty formating with windows. Although I can't stand Macs, I found that its in-built software was the most straightforward way of formating the device.

I have been using a QNAP NAS with a 2 TB HDD.

My model is TS-110

The only problem is that this particular model does not support mkv transcoding. But there's a newer model that I think it does.
