I decided to play some Xbox tonight, haven't played anything in the past few days. Turned it on, worked fine for about 20-30 minutes. I was checking out Inside Xbox and the marketplace. I tried to play the Scene it? Box Office Smash demo, it froze up on the start up menu. Turned off my 360 and when I turned it back on it froze right away. Made some weird noise as well.
Seems to be working fine now, not the best time for it to take a dump on me. But if it does at least I'll be able to pick up an Elite, been waiting for my console to go so I could get one.
Any one else having any issues like this recently?

I had the same problem. I played a game and it kept coming up scratched disk when it was clean. I took it out, the machine froze, I turned off the system, then back on to Red Ring of Death. Which is just fantastic because it's right before my birthday. Son of a b*tch!!!

Thats exactly how my first console got the red rings, only mine was right before the release of Halo 3. I'm tempted to buy an elite and sell the console that I have now. I'm still undecided though, don't know if I want to wait till it dies or do it now while it still works.

I had this happen to mine right before the price drop on the 360's. I would get hang ups and freezes just when trying to move in between tabs on the dashboard. My drive was also making an unholy noise like the disc was grinding against the tray and roof (the 360 is laying flat) so this posed an unusual problem. All I did to save time was to say F MS and I went down to gamestop w/ my console and everything (cables, controller, etc..) and used my edge card to get $100 worth of trade in credit. Plus I don't know if its going on now but they are having/or had a special of an extra $20 trade in value for your old system, so figure you could easily knock $120 off the price of the elite. I think the bonus system trade in values end on the 11th of Nov. I don't know if they are having the game trade in bonus ($10 in extra trade in credit if you trade in games worth $1 or more(BIG TIME TO GET SOME EASY CREDIT)) but I think that may end on the 11th as well, or it may have been over on the 2nd of Nov. (i'm not sure). Its worth checking out though, save your hassles and just go for it (don't forget to check the sticker so you know what type of system chipset you're getting!!!)

how do you know what system chipset you got?

there are multiple ways to tell. for one you can always look at the manufactured date (the birth of your new xbox), you can also look at what batch it is. If they will allow you to take the system out to inspect it, then there are other ways by identifying what the actual indiviual components are made of. This doesn't require to open the system in any way, just a small flashlight (and know where to look) is all that is needed. Also you can tell if you look inside if you have the new cpu/gpu chipset w/ the correct clamps and soder and heatsinks etc.. There are many ways to see, hit me up on xbl if you would like further info. But with a few moments spent before hand you can tell what cpu/gpu, chipset, drive, and components you are buying. Most of the time the older models are put out for sale due to the fact that they are trying to sell out of the old stock b4 putting the newer models back out for sale. When I went to gamestop after they tallied up a nice $540 of instore credit I asked the guy if he would allow me to into their back room w/ him and pick out my new system. I simply told him that I wanted to make sure that for my money I was getting the components I wanted, he was ok w/ that and away we went. Just remember never ever ever, just "pick up and go" w/ a 360 ALWAYS do your research.

That sucks man, I'm thinking mine is about to die as well. I have a second 360 but a friend is borrowing it right now. I'm hoping that mine doesn't die till I get that one back.

Well his kid is playing it though, he told me when he brought it home that day his son screamed like a little girl and has been playing it ever since. I couldn't do that to his son.
I'm going to get an elite once this one dies anyway, so I'd only be out of an xbox for a few days.

shawn man I wouldn't drop the $399 on the elite. If you're looking to save some $$ just buy the 120gb hdd on ebay (i got mine for $60 w/ shipping included and it works great), and just drop the $199 on an arcade system. The 360's now are all hdmi and all the components that are used in the elite are used in the pro and arcade systems as well, so logic states that there is now no reason to buy an elite man. Since the components that make up an arcade are the same as an elite now, its a lot easier on the wallet.
oh i almost forgot, if you have a hdd already, then just call ms and ask for the data transfer kit (its free) and then just transfer it over and away you go.

I may pick up an arcade version later today, undecided. I already have a 120 GB HDD so I'm good to go there.
Anyone know if the arcade version comes with HDMI, or is it just the pro and elite consoles?

Mine only freezes with Fallout 3 (since I installed it the freezing seems to have stopped, but....) Anyway, I'm getting an Elite (or a 60GB pro) in December, my Xbox is VERY old anyway (it's 2006 version) and I want tha Falcon thing that everyone says is much harder to go RROD. So here are my questions:
-Consoles with falcon, are they really tough against the RROD?
-Without tha transfer kit, is it possible to download my gamertag an the points to a new HD?
