I've looked in my manual but can't seem to find it. Does any know how many gigs the XBox HD actually is? Its just something I've been wondering about. Thanks!

It has a 10 gig harddrive. However , only 8 gigs are available for access by the user, the other 2 for system settings and game developer use.

Kind of like that...but beyond all the confusion is the real truth...
2 Companies made the HDs for the xbox...one used an 8GB HD, the other used a 10 GB HD...however they BOTH were formatted and partitioned to read the same amount of space, becaused they did em all the same...so each HD only has 8GBs of space, regardless if in fact it has more space than that, the other 2GBs are just wasted because the HD isint formatted to recognize it. thunkerkiss is right about how even though it is 8GBs, you only have like 2GBs for game saves and 2 more GBs for Music...

There are four 2 gig partitions on these hard drives in are xboxs'. I've only heard about seagate hard drives being used. Which is a pretty reliable hard drive company. I just hopw the other brand isn't western digital.

I wonder if down the line something can be done to make the other 2 usable? Like something official through the MS. not some dude @ his house.:D

Probably not, because there isint any way to tell which HD you have...unless you void the warranty...MS wouldnt make you do anything that you have to void the warranty to get...plus people would get angry if they paid the same price as their buddy, but their buddy has 2 more gigs...but the biggest reason is that you dont need it...I dont think you will EVER be able to fill up 2GBs of game saves...and you dont need to rip your entire collection of music to your HD, especially when only a few games support playing ingame...

Frost, according to OXM, the xbox harddrive has a total of 10 gigs space, but we the player only have access to 8 of them. The remaining 2 gigs are for system and developer use. If its a lie, OXM told it, lol.

They arent telling a lie...they are just misinformed...

PARTITION TABLE/ DISK AREA MAP

N.B. There doesn’t appear to be a standard partition table on the disk; these values are suspected to be hard-coded in the ROM. None of the values in the tables at the start of the disk look anything like the values following (so far).

(Offsets are from start of disk)

Offset
Size
Use/Type

0x00000000
0.5MB
Disk config area (size is a guess)

0x00080000
750MB
FATX: File cache area 1. This area gets wiped and game-specific data is written to it.

0x2ee80000
750MB
FATX: File cache area 2. This area gets wiped and game-specific data is written to it.

0x5dc80000
750MB
FATX: File cache area 3. This area gets wiped and game-specific data is written to it.?

0x8ca80000
500MB
FATX: XBOX system files (Dashboard, DVD stuff)

0xabe80000
4895MB
FATX: Music/Saved games storage.

The size of the last partition is based on how many clusters are allocated in its cluster chain map table, and the space left on the 8GB disks. The actual value may be less than this, but it is not to be possible for it to be larger (on 8 GB disks). An interesting point to investigate is whether the additional space on the 10GB disks is wasted.
