Ok so I have been wondering this since I got my XBOX 360 and tv. My current television only can go up to a resolution of 1080p and it's native resolution is 720p. I am wondering which setting would be best overall for gameplay and graphics? I currently have it set to 720p and I have been told by a friend that p is always better than i but I see a difference in the sharpness and details when it's set on 1080i. Thanks for the relplies!

First off if your tv can go up to 1080p, then thats naturally what you should be running it at for the best quality. the "i" stands for interlaced. what this means is that in every frame you view of 1080i holds 540 lines of resolution and when in motion the 2 frames interlace each other so you get that kind of picture (frame 1 will have lines 1,3,5,7,9... and frame 2 will have lines 2,4,6,8,10, etc.) "p" stands for progressive which means that every frame of 1080p has 1080 lines of resolution per frame, so it will look far better. If your TV can support 1080p, then just switch your console to 1080p for the best quality picture on the 360.

My tv will only support a max resolution of 1080i and so I am thinking that 720p will look and perform better because of the interlaced in 1080i?

Sorry when I read that, I thought that your tv was capable of 1080p. It all depends, do you want 540 lines of resolution per frame? or 720 lines per frame? Until you can go 1080p I'd suggest doin 720.

Is it the TV or the connection? Are you using HDMI? Because you have to use HDMI for 1080p.

You always want Progressive scan. 1080p, 720p, 480p. It's more solid picture. No question.
The interlaced modes.... 1080i, 480i etc... are too unstable for my taste.

720p > 1080i

Also, you should be using HDMI regardless of 1080p or 720p.
