So yes as my title says I'm a complete XBOX NOOB... I've never owned one or even played one.

However I am debating on buying one finally, and I was wondering what all I should also buy as I'm planning on using it for need for speed games and COD games... I'm also going to get live if its in the budget...

So could you please tell me what all I should get to make my life a little easier?

Thanks.

Rob

Depending how you have your internet set up, and where you place the xbox you'll either need a longer ethernet or a wireless adapter (you don't have to buy the official ones for a hundreed bucks you can use a game adapter from netgear, belkin, etc.). That is of course if you plan on using Live.

There isn't much else in the way of "need" besides a larger harddrive which really is a must, you should always install most games. I say most because there are some out there that actually load slower when it's installed than just from the disc.

The thing is here I have a wireless network... its a secure network however everything within the network can talk with little to no limitations at all. I'm big when it comes too playing hands free (when playing games on the computer mmorpg, I tend to use Skype or team-speak) I don't like typing back and forth between users.

So if there is like some sort of head set or getup that will allow me to talk what should I get?

Factor in LIVE, cause you'll need it. Online just adds so much more and you get lots of deals as well.

The new slim 360's have wireless built in, so that's not a worry.

OH Yeah, all you need is a game adapter (external USB type or maybe you can find an ethernet one like the Netgear wireless g adapter I had for my old original xbox that used to work for years.

But yes, you get a headset that looks something like:

http://www.theco-operatives.com/reviews/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/xbox_360_headset.jpg

It comes with the xbox so no need to purchase separately, but if you're one of those PC gamers that likes to have those huge ear muff headsets, there are some available for the consoles as well, looks something like:

http://reviews.in.88db.com/images/stories/turtle_beach_xbox_headset.jpg

I would suggest (for the default headset) that if you're like me and lays the controller on the ground or the headset falls down and you accidentally step on it, that you buy a spare headset which is ten twenty bucks cheapest just in case. The ones the xbox comes with are moderately sturdy but also kinda flimsy, it takes something like stepping on the thing to break it.

And also yes the new Xbox 360 S- the smaller ones that look like:

http://www.wouldyoukindly.com/wp-content/uploads/Xbox360S4Gbmatte.jpg

Comes with wireless N (currently the fastest as the step down will be wireless g) eliminating the need for an external adapter.

As far as Wired Vs. Wireless with my connection there is no difference between the two so I choose wireless so I don't have to worry about a hundred foot ethernet. I'm sure with other people and their internet wired would be better, but so long as you have a good connection I don't see to much of a difference.

Like it was said before, all Xbox 360's come with a wireless controller with the exception of the Core package. Now the headset that come's with the Xbox 360 has to be plugged into the controller. You can pick up an Xbox 360 wireless headset, I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Headset/dp/B000Q7ZESK. However there are many different wireless headsets.

If you do not buy the new Xbox 360 S, you will need to buy a wireless adapter. I recommend: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter-Networks/dp/B000B6MLV4/ref=sr_1_3?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1291334654&sr=1-3.

I suggest at least getting a 20GB hard drive. It gives you the ability to install games on your hard drive, which will reduce wear and tear on the disk drive, as well as make the Xbox 360 much more quieter.

Games wise, the new Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is very good. And I would suggest getting Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty Black Ops. All three are great titles, and will offer a great amount of replay time.

Welcome to XBA, enjoy your stay! I hope I answered all of your questions.

I agree with everything Silent said except the 20gb, if you can, go higher, after three years of use, with many games I constantly play, I would like to install at least one. But with all the DLC for the games that I play regularly there is hardly any room, so I suggest going for the larger HDD's it's worth the money once you start accumulating games and DLC.

Yes you can but you can only use up to 16gb's worth of space of hard drive space, but you can use more than one hard drive at once. Don't know why they decided to do it like that but that's how it is.

And don't worry we don't mind helping :)

they probably decided to do that so they could sell their product because like hey I dont know about you but Im sure a 250gb xbox drive is way more expencive then say a 250gb external drive.

they gotta keep making money somehow.

I wouldn't go with the 4gb. It's not a lot of room at all, and there is actually a ton of things to do with the 360 and live. You'll quickly fill up your HD.

Ok so how hard is it to upgrade your hard drive... and how expensive is it... because I just don't see how it would cost like over 150$ and that is the difference between the prices...

look at that how was that for a good guess... so basicaly the way Im looking at it there now is Xbox 4gb ($199) + 250gb HD ($150)

199.00 + 150.00 = $349 Taxes - $401.35 <<< Best buy also has free shipping

The Xbox Kinect that already has the 250gb hd installed costs $399 before taxes...

So note to everyone who is thinking about updating to the new Xbox if you don't want kinect buy the 4gb 360 as well as a 250gb HD... (Cheaper then the 250gb kinect) Think about it... with the $50 some odd dollars your gunna save you can get a year of Xbox Live Gold.

Tell me is this not true or what?

if you're going to be playing a lot online w/ other gamers, then the xbox live service has the psn beat hands down. granted thats just one aspect, however, if most of your gaming is going to be done online, its a factor that can't be overlooked or disregarded.

Just to follow up on what Sym says.

Here's a technical viewpoint:

In terms of Online Community on exclusive online games, PSN lags behind XBL, it doesn't have the sheer amount of people to back any of it's online exclusive games, bar maybe Uncharted 2 or so I've been told. Also between the two console's GPU alone, the ATI Xenos has far less bottle-necking compared to the Nvidia RSX, which means much better anti-aliasing, which means less jaggedy jagged outlines, which means a smoother picture.

However, this is normally only seen on Multi-Plats, in terms of graphics compared between the ATI Xenos and the Nvidia RSX working in conjunction with the PS3's Cell Processor, exclusive PS3 games (given that the developer had used their tools correctly) will look superior to many if not everything put out by the ATI Xenos. Here's why that is, the PS3's Cell Processor is able to take on jobs that the GPU normally would have, taking stress off the GPU and producing a much better picture over all.

But here's the kicker, most games can't be ported from the PS3 to the Xbox (well normally because Dev's don't like taking the time out to do it right IE: FFXIII) SO, Multi-Plat games (that devs are more and more moving to) 9 out of ten times look better on the Xbox than the PS3 because they were designed on the xbox and ported to the PS3.

I've never noticed a difference in graphics between the two to be honest. Now graphics between the consoles and PC, PC by far wins!

Well of course :P the consoles both use five year old GPU's.

But there is a noticeable difference in Anti-Aliasing between the PS3 and 360 all you need to do is look at the outlines of structures, characters, or scenery. The little black lines. Now, on Exclusives done right, the CPU for the PS3 is helping the GPU churn out gorgeous graphics so you really wouldn't notice anything but moderate graphical superiority or equality between the PS3 exclusives and the 360 Exclusives.

``Rob
12-05-2010, 08:02 AM
so in simplest terms the Xbox is better then the PS3 because its faster... and better online games...
