The New California Republic (NCR) is a federation/democratic republic of states in California with holdings in Nevada. The Republic is dedicated to restoring order and progress to the Wasteland, as well as old world values such as democracy, liberty, and the rule of law. As of early 2240, the population was around 700,000 people. In terms of political influence, economical power and population, the NCR is arguably the largest and most powerful known power group maintaining the Hoover Dam and an embassy on the Strip. The NCR aims to wrestle control of the Strip from Mr. House eventually, but cannot do so while the Legion remains a threat. The securitron armies possessed by House pose a massive threat to both the NCR and the Legion.

Caesar’s Legion is an imperialist, slave-trading organization, led and founded by Caesar. The legionnaires are a well-organized, jingoistic fighting force that, as of 2281, mainly operate east of the Grand Canyon and in Arizona. The Legion is comprised mostly of reconditioned tribals and their young offspring. Caesar's Legion is slowly encroaching on the city of New Vegas. They continue to contest NCR over all of the region. In the words of its founder, the Legion is a nationalist, imperialist, totalitarian, homogeneous culture that absorbs everyone into itself, obliterating their previous identity. As a single-minded, monolithic empire, the Legion's aim is to dominate the known world and unite it under its banner.

Robert Edwin House, 261, is the autocratic leader and profiteer of the city of New Vegas in the Mojave Wasteland in the year 2281. House is foremost responsible for the founding of RobCo Industries, the creation of Mr. New Vegas, and civilizing the current New Vegas casino tribes. Mr. House can be described as efficient and pragmatic. He foresees the rebuilding of humanity on the shoulders of New Vegas' economic strength. For instance, he boasts that he could have a man in space within 50 years; within 100 years he claims he will have colonization ships ready to find an unpolluted planet. House believes that all democracies end with failure; his style of leadership is best described as that of a benevolent dictatorship. He reasons that he alone is in a position to rebuild and perfect the world, as he is not motivated by power, money or the possibility of worship. His only long-term goals are to maintain control of the city he had always loved, and from that show humanity the stars. He sees the NCR's wealth as an asset to his plans but wishes to avoid annexation and keep Vegas independent. Anyone and anything that stands in his way will be removed, with money or force. A staunch pragmatist by nature, Mr. House would regularly design and run mathematical paradigms based on global political and socioeconomic conditions in an effort to predict future events; by 2066, these projections led him to the inexorable conclusion that the world would be engulfed in a nuclear war within fifteen years. Worse still, his contacts within the military informed him that seventy-seven Chinese warheads were aimed at his beloved Las Vegas. Armed with this knowledge and his projections, House went to work on a secret plan to ensure the city would survive this apocalypse and that he would live to see the world after the war. He programmed multiple mainframes with satellite links meant to disable the vast majority of the Chinese missiles while in flight, then designed an array of high powered laser cannons, which he had installed on the roof of the Lucky 38, to deal with any missile his program had missed. To preserve himself, he took equally drastic steps: his body was permanently connected to an extremely sophisticated life support device to take care of his physiological needs, while his brain was wired directly into his vast information network via an enormous supercomputer. Essentially, he became a one-of-a-kind humanoid brain bot, with the Lucky 38 and an army of Securitrons serving as his "body". House is recognized to be mankind's only hope of long-term survival.

Yes Man is a securitron robot that serves as Benny's assistant in 2281, and is an integral part of Benny's scheme to take control of Vegas. Yes Man was originally a generic securitron robot working for House, like all the other securitrons found on the Strip. He was damaged by a pulse grenade, and was recovered by Benny, who then allowed a member of the Followers of the Apocalypse to examine the securitron, in exchange for reprogramming it. The reprogramming was extensive, and resulted in Yes Man being designed to do exactly as he is told (although the lack of restrictions on who is doing the ordering would later be Benny's undoing). The plan was to somehow dispose of House, plant Yes Man's A.I. in the Lucky 38 mainframe which would then put him (and by extension, Benny) in control of all the other securitrons on the Strip, and then take the platinum chip to Fortification Hill where he could activate the securitron army, enable the Mark. II OS and use the upgraded securitron army to take control of Hoover Dam and Vegas.
The above information came from The Vault (a Fallout wiki) (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki).

You can play on your own side until the end. Before you go off and finish certain "story ending quests" make sure you have a save file or two on hand so that you can go back, side with another faction, and then finish the game on a new ending and get the achvs for it. When I played New Vegas I didn't side w/ any faction until the end of the game.

Remember though, your companions DO determine some outcomes. You can't have Boone in your party and expect to complete the quests for Ceasar b/c Boone will just start shooting everyone who's loyal to Ceasar. If you want to keep Boone in you party, have him wait somewhere safe (I had him wait in my hotel room in Novac), and then continue on your quests for Ceasar.

Hope this helps! If you have anymore q's about New Vegas, just ask away!

Welcome to the Asylum!

You may be able to wait till the end but you will be warned way before then if you continue to do missions for a certain faction. The other ones will be be hostile towards you so just make a save file before you get to the platinum chip. Then side with what ever one you want. That way you can go back to your original save and choose another faction later on.

While playing today I arrived in New Vegas and plan on working for the NCR. Is there anything important I should know? For example, are the Securitrons going to be hostile towards me? Will I still be able to use my suite in the Lucky 38? By the way, I ended up making a save file just before entering the Strip so I can go back and side with a different faction. Thanks for the advice and welcomes!
