Guitar Hero Smash Hits

I know on a hand full of guitar hero games that you can play with the xbox controller as the guitar since there is not a microphone to register the controller as such. But does anyone know if you can play GHSH with the xbox controller? Or do you actually have to have the guitar? I bought it but don't want to open it and not be able to return it if this is the case.
