Is my xbox fried....reading......open tray

Quick question. My son and I are trying to fire up the xbox and every game we put in keeps saying the same thing

........reading.....then open tray.

I went on the xbox site and tried did the things it said and still nothing. Any ideas? Or should I just go buy a new one

Sounds like the laser is done as it's not reading discs.

Unless you have somewhere locally that repairs. Could try calling Xbox if it's under warranty as well

I dont know if this is relevant in any way, but i have the same issue with mine sometimes. I notice it more so when my xbox has been turned off for a while. When i boot it up it says reading disc then goes to "open tray" but after its been on for a few mins and warms up... it reads the discs fine...

That is typically the sign of the DVD player going bad. I've fixed the issue by replacing the drive.

Local stores could do it fairly easily.

thanks for the info. I did try leaving it on for awhile and then putting a game in but nothing happened.

Where would someone look to have it fixed at a local store? I live in Calgary and didn't even know that was a possiblity. Would be nicer than having to mail it to xbox

I actually found a guy in town that fixes them. We are now operational. thanks for the input

Mine does the same thing, and on top of it it will only open the tray with a disk in it. I got sick of ripping into it to clean the laser just to get it to work for a month or so. I'll just save my pennies and get a new one.
