Gears of War 3 - Versus and the Shotgun

Hi guys, hope all are well.

I haven't posted on here for a while, but find myself frustrated and have a question to pose regarding GOW3:

To be great at GOW 3 versus on XBL, would you consider it essential to implement "heavy use" of the shotgun (sawed-off or gnasher) most of the time, i.e., substantially more than rifles.

I ask this because (just as it was on GOW2) all anyone seems to be doing most of the time is running around with shotguns like headless chickens. No need to craft tactics, just get in close and shoot heads off. While this is fun, its seems on most maps this is all anyone does and the game turns into one big freakish panic attack.

I recieved a message the other day from a fellow gamer/troll/****face which was along the lines of "learn to use the gnasher, newb", suggesting he was in disbelief I was using the rifle more than the shotty. Since then I am pretty much making it a self proclaimed mission to get good at this game without jerking off the shotgun 90% of the time.

Anyways, was the troll right? Was the troll wrong? Does the troll have a small wang? Thoughts appreciated.

Additionally, on a side note...

If the troll is right, and I am indeed the newb I strive so hard not to be - which shotgun do you think is most suitable to run around with, like a headless chicken?

Troll has a small wang probably ;) I personally hate the shotty and only use it if I'm in melee range. Because everyone else uses the shotty it means I have to cause I can't chainsaw when they one-shot me

I figured it was likely a wang issue...

I'm digging the retro-lancer, does the business up close and at medium-ish range too.
