Oicw

Obviously this is the best rifle, but I wonder why the designers claim this to be nearly a real sim of war (1 shot your gone most of the time, 2 or 3 finishes ya.) but didn't make the weapons realistic. Im guessing balance? The OICW is supposed to shoot HE bullets (i.e. each bullet should make an explosion capable of taking out light armor such as jeeps in a single well placed shot.) no to mention the programming and targeting? For those of you who don't know much about the OICW real version (will be produced and equiped to soldiers in 2008) buy or read the recent special edition of Popular Science. I can see changing the weapon to make it balanced but if your going to make it a total different weapon why put it in?

JJaX 02-20-2003 09:18 AM

Yes, we only get the rifle part of the OICW. We all know the OICW hooks up to your eye and all that cool stuff. Truly a weapon designed for the modern soldier.

Why put it in the game? Ever notice the intro "The year is 2008"

If it wasnt in the game people would |3itch and moan "Waaah, why isnt the OICW in the game"

I think the weapon balance is fine. The only real edge the OCIW gives you in GR is the 6 round GL. Other guns give you more zoom, less recoil and faster calibration. Its all about how you wanna play the game. Dont get me wrong, i love my OICW, but im getting fond of other guns as well.

The OICW cant do the things it was designed to do in this game, for example you cant aim the gun around a corner and have a targeting image show up in your eye.

How do you go about simulating all of the OICWs functions in a "game" without altering the gameplay as a whole?

Slayer02 02-20-2003 04:01 PM

Exactly what I was thinking, I just thinks its kind of lame they changed the oicw to fit the game. Of course it would be lame to change a great game like GR to fit a gun. Well, oh well. Still explosive rounds would be soooooooooo cool. Lol, that would be so unbalanced though.

ive never actually used oic but when i did i noticed that it was accurate and just took 2-3 shot to take a guy down.what i waanna no is what ur tryin to get at , i dont really understand

Kraft 02-20-2003 10:35 PM

2 or 3 shots? I've never wasted more than 1 :) As for real life, a lot of these guns are toned down a bit, as a saw would actually tear you apart if you took too many rounds.

Slayer02 02-21-2003 02:24 AM

Yeah, still though lol. Im trying to point out that they TOTALLY jacked the oicw. I mean its not even the oicw anymore lol. it should be groicw lol. :p

20mm expolosive slug

Slayer is saying that the OICW in GR doesnt really do everything a real OICW can do.

Read this

The Objective Individual Combat Weapon Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) provides an enhanced capability for the 21st century infantryman, with the potential to selectively replace the M16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher, and M4 carbine. The fire control system (FCS), using a laser range finder, pinpoints the precise target range at which the HE round will burst and relays this information to the 20mm ammunition fuzing system. Fragments from the bursting munition will defeat PASGT armor. The sighting system provides full 24-hour capability by employing uncooled IR sensor technology for night vision.

Specific goals include demonstration of hit probability greater than 0.5 out to 500 meters and 0.3 to 0.5 out to 1,000 meters. Effectiveness against personnel and light armor targets, given a hit, will be greater than those of the M433 High Explosive Dual Purpose cartridge fired from the M203 Grenade Launcher and the M855 cartridge fired from the M16A2 rifle. Specific goals include a 0.5 probability of incapacitation to 300 meters (point target) and a 0.2 probability of incapacitation to 300 meters (defilade target) in FY99.

Program guidelines were derived from the Small Arms Master Plan (SAMP) and Joint Service Small Arms Master Plan (JSSAMP). OICW-ATD is managed by JSSAP and will provide superior firepower to the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Special Operations Command, Navy, and Coast Guard.
On 04 August 2000 Alliant Techsystems Integrated Defense Co., LLC, Hopkins, Minn., was awarded a $6,946,000 increment as part of a $95,426,483 cost-plus-award-fee contract for research and development to advance the state-of-the-art Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW), Program Definition and Risk Reduction (PD&RR). Work will be performed in Hopkins, Minn., and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of FY04. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. There was an announcement in the Commerce Business Daily on Nov. 5, 1999, and one bid was received.

The most impressive and useful feature of these munitions is their airburst capability. "The fuzing technology is key to our system," says Alliant program manager Michael C. Moore. He explains that a laser rangefinder pinpoints the precise distance at which the fragmenting round needs to detonate, killing the enemy even if he is hiding behind trees or walls, or in trenches.

The Army Infantry Center in Fort Benning, Ga., charged with evaluating new technologies and tactics, agrees. The OICW can take out the types of targets that in the past required an M16 equipped with an M203 grenade launcher. The difference is that the OICW can do the job with pinpoint accuracy. This is a critical advantage when enemies hide among civilians--a prime survival tactic in urban warfare. And the OICW's range of 1000 meters is five times greater than what an M16 equipped with an M203 can achieve

Ack whatever, you get the point. Just type "OICW" in yahoo or something. Read up.

PKM is used primarily in Russia. OICW will first be used by elite soldiers such as Navy S.E.a.Ls and Rangers, then maybe 1 - 2 years later normal infantry will be equipped with it. I believe you have to be a military officer to purchase an OICW.

Notice I said I'll try to get it years down the road. I'm in Med School right now and after I pay of my student loans I could spend the money on one. Doctors do pretty well in the financial region.

Not as much as in the past, but I enjoy the work and the challenge. Plus think of all the toys that I could buy.

Slayer02 02-23-2003 01:55 AM

Let me get this straight. An OICW thread turned into a doctor chatting thread? LOL
