    Question MLS Extratime Question

Has anyone played ESPN MLS Extratime? Is it good? Is it comparable to ISS on the Nintendo 64? If so, I want it.

Thanks for the site pbug. It sounds just like ISS64. Do you have the game?

not yet...not sure if I want to go for this one or David Beckham soccer. I will probably pass on the FIFA World Cup 2002 and wait for FIFA 2003 until the fall.

I haven't heard of any reviews re: Beckham soccer.

Here's another review on MLS Extra Time.

    http://xbox.ign.com/articles/356/356836p1.html

While Konami used it's ISS engine...the reviewer (who is far more familiar with these games) felt this version was lacking some of the usual Konami lustre when it comes to soccer games.

This makes me want to rent the game before actually buying it.

If you plan on buying it, let me know how you like it.

If this game plays exactly like ISS on the N64, I would be more than happy. I kind of like the fact that the international players are not real. It kind of feels old-school, like something on the super nintendo. I loved the fact that the players on ISS were not real (J. Platt for England). I'll probably rent it first though.

Apparently Konami is releasing two soccer games this year on the Xbox. One is the MLS version, another is called ISS2 and this version has the appropriate licences which have the player names on the jerseys (and which are announced by the announcer.) The MLS version only has player names for those playing in the MLS.

(Here's a first look provided by Gamespot UK on ISS2)

    http://www.gamespot.co.uk/stories/ne...107467,00.html

One obstacle, I believe ISS2 is not available in North America. I called EB here in Canada and it is not on their release list. However if you check out EB UK, ISS2 is due out May 17 (at around the same time David Beckam Soccer is due.)

Here is the link to EB UK and their brief write-up on ISS2:

Do you know whether the Xbox games are regionally coded? That is, if one was to purchase ISS2 from the UK, would it work on an Xbox purchased in North America?

I have been reading in EGM and XBOX magazine about how the ISS series is more popular in Japan and Great Britain than in North America. I guess those sites are proof. I don't know if you can play UK or Japanese games on a North American XBOX. I just find it a bit strange that Konami would make a game for the UK but not the US, since the XBOX is a US system. I guess I just assumed that the US and Canada would have access to all of the games released for the system.

I went to the store today to rent MLS Extratime, but they didn't have it yet. Hopefully they get it in soon.

Well, this is just my opinion, but I think that the animation in the Konami soccer games seems more fluid. Because of this, the players seem to move more realistically, and you feel like you have more control over what the play is doing. Don't get me wrong, I like EA soccer games, but I had FIFA 64 and ISS for the nintendo 64, and I liked ISS so much better. The graphics in the Konami games is not as refined, but it doesn't really matter because the animation is so good. The latest EA soccer game that I have played was the first one that came out for the PS2. It was a pretty good game, but it just seemed to be missing something. I guess it's just personal preference.

More review of MLSs Extratime...it offers some comparisons between the style offered via EA and Konami.

I have still been trying to find a copy of MLS Extratime. Based on my limited experience, I would tend to agree with the reviewer that Konami seems to be "undermarketing" this games.

Yeah, what the hell gives? I have been looking for a copy of the game too. The Electronic Boutique website said that it was released on March 29th, yet when I went to the store, the idiots there had not even heard of the game. I also checked Walmart and Toys R Us. I can't find it anywhere.

Apparently this XBA member reviewer was able to get a hold of one:

i like this game alot, its plays great! the only bad thing is in the world mode the players are just announced as numbers because they did not get the license for them. but other than that, this is a really fun game. The through balls are alot of fun also...i didnt really like the last fifa game on EA, this one is much better to me...if your a soccer fan, i think it is more than worth checking out

I finally found Extratime at Toys 'R Us, and I bought it the other day. I like the game a lot...the animation is very good, the players move realistically, the passing is great, the players make realistic cuts and feigns, and I enjoy it very much overall. However, there are a few things that I would change about it. First of all, since the players only move in 8 directions, that takes some getting used to. I am also not used to the shooting aspects of the game yet...the longer that you hold the button down, the higher the arc of the kick will be. It's kind of strange, but I can see it's usefullness already, especially if you want to float a shot over an onrushing keepers head...that looks really cool!! Well, it's probably easier if you asked questions about it, and then I can answer them.

Although there is a Portuguese national team, I do not believe there are any club teams. I don't recognize all of them, but they all look like South American teams. Have you ever heard of the club Tormenta??? Who the heck are they?
