Thread: Are video games becoming the porn of the new millenium??

Default Are video games becoming the porn of the new millenium??

Yeah, i know "What the hell is he talking about". Well this stems from the "Canadiens Beware" thread.

With video games reaching all time highs in sales, you know someone is going to take notice. Usually the wrong someone.

With content becoming more questionable all the watchdog groups are probably salivating with the notion of a new crusade.

I'm a parent, and i keep a watchfull eye on what my kids watch and see. But i'll be damned if someone is going to tell me what i can and can't play. Actually, read, listen to, and watch.

Do these stimuli produce disfunctional people?? Hey i know someone who wigs out when he hears Lionel Ritchie, why don't they ban his music??

The porn reference is that, we all know it's out there and the masses just pretend it doesn't exist, even though someone is buying this material, because if no one was they would dissapear.

Will these so called questionable games become the same thing, they will be out there and may be diffcult to get, but you still will.

Our so called "Moral" society still with all it's regulations and such, made Grand Theft Auto III a almost cult following, and you needed a parent to buy it, so people who is really to blame, and is the government sayuing we just aren't doing a good enough job on our own so we will decide for you.

So is the system ok the way it is, a rating on the box and parental consent.

Or does the government really need to get more involved.

I vote for freedom of choice.

Freedom of choice is the way to go...

On the other hand, you don't hear alot about XBOX's parental controls for games and DVD's. If I had kids I would use it until i decide when they are old enough for certain types of games.

Personally I would like to see more Mature and/or Adult type games released to the XBOX's lineup and just push the use of the parental controls/password function...simple as that.

    Just my 2 cents worth

highlite23 I think you've single handedly expressed the thoughts of all gamers that have an IQ over the level of mentally retarded. It is the job of the parent to raise a child well not the government. And if a parent isn't raising a child well then that child should be sent to a foster parent or someone else that is able to give the child a good upbringing. Of course thats just my opinion I could be wrong.
"Halo 2 is alot like Halo, only it's Halo on fire going through the hospital zone 130 miles per hour being
chased by helicopters and ninjas, and the ninjas are on fire too"

Griesemer: Halo 2 is going to be everything you liked about Halo, only wrapped in bacon and deep-fried. As everyone knows, bacon makes even the best things even better.

I agree with all of you. I agree with the rating and such so that the parents have an idea of the content. But the parents have to have responsibility over what their kids are playing or watching. I was watching the E! channel yesterday and say a story on one of my favorite shows Married with Children. It had a woman that let her 8 and 10 year olds watch the show, even though she had never seen it herself. She assumed with a named like MWC that the show was like 7th heaven. It wasn't so, so she started a boycott of the show. She should have just shut the tv off and deserved the a$$hole of the year that larry flynt gave her.

That is the great thing about the XBox! What it allows is exactly that...Parental Controls! MS put the issue of morality and what kids should be allowed to play into the hands of the gamers. If the parents feel that certain things are not suitable for their children, then by all means, institute your right to use that little control feature and prevent your kids from viewing that material. If the parents are not smart enough to realize that they really should be a part of their children's lives enough to keep them from seeing that material, or could care less, then don't blame the government for allowing the kids to play this material! If the parents want to, they can read the materials of the system that they bought their kids and institute that nice little feature and not have to worry about what kind of games their kids play in the future.

Sorry, I know, you started the rant highlite, and you made some really good points, but I've read and studied all of the arguments as to why the government needs to look after the "future". Almost all of those arguments could easily apply to the parents.

some of the ratings are a bit over what the game's content really has. super smash bros. Melee did not deserve a Teen rating. because of that my little brother's friend (12 years old) is not allowed to play it. his parents are strict with the rating system. they say that the ESRB must be right when they rate games. now i think that the ESRB should just give a SUGGESTION to parents. not a "this is what it is and if ur kid is under the age, he/she cannot play it" the thing is that kids and some people are easily influenced by content that they are exposed to. the parent comes in here. the parent should know what the kid's personality is and if he/she is easily influenced by media. my brother doesn't care about blood in his games. he has not killed or talked about it. so from there, my dad lets him play "M" rated games.
